Do lychee or white sapote fruit in Borneo
« on: December 19, 2018, 06:28:59 PM »
I'm asking this because I think my climate in tropical Ecuador is most similar to Borneo, I'm just wondering if lychee or white sapote do well in this climate like Borneo?

Well lychee don't fruit in Borneo since there is no cold stress.it will however grow into large and beautiful tree.in areas with higher elevation lychees do fruit (not in Borneo but in Java and Bali).no idea about white sapote but I read somewhere it favors a drier habitat not areas that rains year long

well it may get a bit colder here than borneo because of the cold front and elevation of 900m, the coldest it gets at  the lowest is mybe 16'c. Yeah I've herd white sapote likes drier also, but I've seen it fruit in rainy part of Hawaii, so I'm not so sure

Then if that's the case you'll get some lychees to fruit.

Borneo is a large island! It's not all lowland tropics. They have high elevation areas also.

Yes there are areas with high elevation too.among the well known areas in Malaysia Borneo are kundasang and bario.bario is well known for it's apple.however I've never heard of lychees being grown for commercial basis

Here's an article from the famed trubus magazine an indonesian agricultural magazine.its about lychees cultivation in West Java and also Bali at an altitude of 300m to 500m.it also mentions about lychees being grown and fruiting at lowland altitude of 50m in the island of seram situated in the moluccas.not sure if the article has any truth but the this magazine seems to be quite respectable.hopefully Indonesian members here can shed some light on it
