Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best way to root feijoa cuttings?
« on: April 25, 2020, 12:40:51 PM »
shpaz, what type of guava are you speaking of??

I have had decent success rooting tropical guavas, but NO success rooting feijoa/pineapple guava (in perlite!!)!

Also, does anyone know if strawberry guava (psidium cattleyanum) roots from cuttings? I have a branch that broke on my bush, and is barely hanging on there. I'd hate for it to go to waste.. maybe air layer it?

This is how I rooted tens of Guava cuttings this winter/spring:

What you will need:
a. Guava cuttings
b. Peat moss
c. Perlite
d. 2 clear plastic cups of the same size
e. 1 painted or covered plastic cup of the same size as the 2 clear cups (I warped a clear cup with black electric tape)
f. Heating mat (with thermostat)

My Method:
1. Prepare a potting mixture of 60% peat moss, and 40% perlite. Pre-moisten the mix;
2. Clean the cuttings then dip them in diluted clonix (1 parts clonix 1.5 parts water);
3. Drill 4-5 small holes on/near the bottom of one of the clear plastic cups;
4. Fill 1/3 of that cup with the potting mix. put one guava cutting in the cup and start filling the area around it with potting mix until the cup is almost full. Press lightly on the potting mix and add more if you need;
5. Put the 2nd clear plastic cup on top of the first cup to make a green house like dome. Use a tape to securely attach them together. Don't make holes on the 2nd cup;
6. Insert the bottom cup into the painted/covered cup. this will keep light from getting to the soil (roots don't like light);
7. Put this on a heat mat set to 77-68f degrees (25-25.5c); [you can use another cup with potting soil (inserted into a painted cup) to stick the thermostat in if you need];
8. Leave them be for about 3 weeks. After that, you can check for roots periodically by simply removing the painted/covered cup. Very simple.

Mine rooted within 3-6 weeks. I have about 60-65% success rate using this method.

Another method I have used with slightly lower success is a bit more difficult as it requires a lot of DIY. I 'll share it if there is enough interest.

Setup before inserting it in a covered cup

After inserting in a covered cup

Amazing roots

I hope this method works for feijoas

Lemon and strawberry Cattleyanum guavas.Fast growth,early fruiting and abundant fruiting.
Dont think you can grow the real tropical guavas there.
Ugni its the bast tasting guava in the world but the fruit its verry small,needs acid soil and doesnt like drought.

Do you mean the ugni molinae? resource I have checked says it grows in all type of soils and is drought tolerant. Do you have a source that has plenty of info about this plant? I really want to grow it  ;D.

Welcome to the froum,

this place is surely better than FB. Nobody wants to steal you personal information here haha

Dream is an Atemoya and not a Cherimoya I believe.

82

I had one in full sun all day in 41 and it didn't burn. It also won't grow while the temp is  25-35 celcius continue.

Then what temperatures does it need to grow?

83
I'm growing one in a 35L bonsai bag. I let nature throw whatever it wants at it. New leaves did get partially burned two days ago when it was 41C.
I received it from Daley's in Feb 2016, situated at Lake Illawarra, NSW.

Damn, burnt at 41C! that doesn't bode well for me and our 50C (122F) summers   :-\

I have been growing mine (Got seeds from Oscar) since August 2018 indoors. They are still very small but with large leaves that are so pretty.

My mail forwarding company would only ship seeds received from within the US.

It is odd that's it is on the newer leaves. Isn't magnesium a mobile nutrient?

Magnesium deficiency

Should I add Epsom salt?

City water can be hard.  If you boil a pot of water, do you get white scale on the pot?

No, no white scale on my pots

Yellow at the edges of leaves... salt buildup in the soil?  Do you have very hard water?

I use city water, de-chlorinated.

Moved to SWFL in the late 70's, every winter there were multiple days/weeks where all the neighbors covered their plants with bed sheets against the cold. Haven't seen a bed sheet in forever, not a single night below freezing. I can't speak to sea rise, and sure it's anecdotal evidence, but it's so obviously much hotter year-round now.

This is happening when I used to live as well. In the 90s I remember turning on the heaters in the winter to warn up the house. In the past 4 years, My mom didn't even bother taking the heaters out of storage during the winter. It's just summer and a long fall/spring then summer again.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Olosapo nutrient deficiency
« on: January 20, 2020, 01:14:49 PM »
I have a 14 month old Olosapo I have been growing indoors because I love it too much to gamble with planting it outdoors in our extremely hot and windy weather. Anyway, the plant's new growth is starting to show some type of nutrient deficiency but I don't know which nutrient. I do give the plant diluted solution (4ml/100ml) of NPK 10-10-7.5 plus mico nutrients every month or so. I sure need your help. Here are the pics:

Im growing the plant under the following LED lights:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07B62PB28/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

During the course of the year, the tree have grown closer to the light, can this be a light burn? or a nutrient deficiency? and if so which nutrient?

Thanks in advance!

Is this Garcinia humilis or Garcinia Laterifolia?

Mine is 13 months old. It is 2 feet long growing in a pot of peat plus perlite. I have not given it much fertilizer (maybe 3 applications of diluted NPK?). It is my favorite tree in my collection. Almost died on me 3 months back when the automatic watering system failed. It was a huge scare. Since then it has flushed new growth. May it live long and prosper!

After reading that whole bunchosia thread about mislabelled armeniaca...does anybody have more information about the “real/better” bunchosia armeniaca versus the “common/inferior” one labelled by Logees and others as armeniaca that is supposedly grandiflora?  I have one of these, it’s okay.  Im curious about the other type

Link?

If you guys want great healthy seeds. Mike is the man to get them from!!

That's true. I tried many times to germinate Jamaica Cherry seeds and failed. I finally did it when I got seeds from Mike. They were so fresh they readily germinated!

Just be careful of consuming large amounts of star fruit juice as it may induce chronic kidney disease even in healthy individuals.

Studies:

Acute kidney injury associated with ingestion of star fruit [2016]:

Star fruit toxicity: a cause of both acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease [2015]:

The star fruit as a cause of acute kidney injury [2017]:

Again, frequent consumption of large amounts, often on empty stomach, may cause these issues.

Interested in West Indian seeds as well. They make salt tolerant root stocks.

I have a really good one. I think there is quite a bit of variation with this species. I know of quite a few people that don't like it but everyone that has tasted my tree has liked the fruit. I have eaten fruit off of a huge tree at Kampong in Coconut Grove that wasn't good. All of the trees I have tasted that were purchased from Ray Jones have been excellent. They taste like a strong spicy apricot. Unfortunately Ray Jones has passed away and I don't know where his seeds came from. I grafted on some branches from a friends tree from the same seed batch and I seem to be getting better pollination. I would plant these in at least pairs or graft or multigraft a single tree.

This is one of the best Eugenias I have eaten. Much better than grumichama and maybe even better that Zill Dark surinam.

I'm willing to buy few seeds from you :)
