Can I ripen a green papaya?
« on: October 24, 2015, 05:09:08 PM »
The wind just blew a medium sized green papaya off my plant and I was wondering if there was any way to ripen it?  No hint of yellow and I'm guessing it's probably a goner.

your good, if you want it to ripen faster put it in a paper bag. either way it will ripen. You can also make papaya salad at this point while its green.

unless there is some yellow on it
it will not ripen properly, or, at all.
it needs %7 yellow to ripen.

i read somewhere that you can scratch the outside with s knife
creating several slits down the side
but, i think thats meant to do on the tree to speed it up

tried it twice. first time didnt work, second is on the tree now.

If any of the papaya fruit was ripening normally with some yellow on it, from the same level or above the one that dropped, it should ripen.

Greenman and FLnative are correct.

If it is green green, there are some good recipes out there.  Pickled is one, Thai green papaya salad is another...

Let me clarify it depends on the papaya, my Caribbean red always ripen when picked green, sunrise and sunset need at least a stripe of yellow

Red Lady also needs color.

you have a Carib Red that will ripen when picked completely green with no yellow at all on it ?
was it more than 1 fruit you saw this ?
do they actually get soft/sweet/edible ?

last year when it froze here, i yanked all the fruit off of my 3 trees
and put them in a pile and watched them rot over the weeks.
not one turned even a tiny bit yellow.
