Cherry of the Rio Grande - Too Big!
« on: May 02, 2018, 12:58:34 PM »
My 3 biggest Cherries are 2 years old... around 8 ft and residing in 15 gallon pots...  and in warm weather needs watering at least once and sometimes twice a day. I am fond of my plants...  but don't really like the idea of being tethered to them.
They've finished blooming... and now I'm thinking about cutting them back... maybe in half.... any suggestions?
Also... I would love an automated irrigation system to free me up from the daily routine of watering 60 plus pots.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Kevin

Nice job on the Cherry bush.  Sounds awesome.

Drip system to automate should be pretty easy.  Sprinkler control box, sprinkler valve, 5/8" poly tubing, 1/4" tubing from the large tube to each pot with a dripper.  Home depot has that stuff.

Could you elaborate on your kiddie pool suggestion.
Would it act like a giant saucer reservoir?

i had gotten one last spring
when i went to put it in ground, i looked at the root system
the roots were very fine and very close to the surface.
i knew with this hot weather we get, i would have water issues.
i mulch the hell out of it.
Usually, people say keep the mulch away from the trunk
i have a hard time doing that with the amount of mulch i use.

My understanding and also experience,
indicates that some species are much more susceptible
to fungal issues on the trunk than others.
i am pretty sure my CORG was taken from a cutting or air-layer,
so i figured mulch touching the trunk shouldnt hurt it
and so far it has not.

the kiddie pool doesnt sound like a bad idea.
i have a 5gal buckets for a few plants, and when i put drainage holes,
i would put them about an inch above the bottom, and use some lava rock at the bottom,
so there is a reservoir that can be used to keep the soil moist.
Some kind of screen (a type of false bottom) ,
would not be a bad idea on top an inch or so of lava rocks.

So tell me... is the kiddie pool a pot or a saucer?
Either way... not practical for my situation.
Small in town lot with limited space.
