Citrus General Discussion / Re: Grafting question (inter stem)
« on: June 18, 2016, 01:07:10 AM »
I can't tell you if it is going to be any different.  I just grafted Kishu onto a Persian lime on trifoliate , as well as onto blood orange on trifoliate, as well as onto honey mandarin on trifoliate.  I guess to complete the experiment I should graft onto just trifoliate or some other rootstock.  Van

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Parafilm tape question
« on: June 16, 2016, 03:08:06 PM »
Well, I went to take the tape off and broke the original grafts off.  In examining them, they didn't look that well calloused over.  So I just ended up cleft grafting them to a branch.  The other mistake I probably made was that I grafted pommelos with mandarins. I think the pommelos with over take the mandarins.  I won't be back here for probably a years so we'll see next year.  Van

So I'm back in CA visiting my parents. It looks like 2 of the 3 grafts are still alive (Tahitian pomelo and Merigold grapefruit).  The  pomelo rootstock from seed  was pushing new growth all around but these grafts have not push at all yet.  So are these going to push at some time?

Today I cleft grafted Pixie, Valentine pomelo, 88-2, Cara Cara, And Rio Red.  So we'll see how it goes.

Fyliu I did use the parafilm to keep the grafts tight.  I didn't know any better then.  Hopefully they took since they are still green.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Will be ordering from CCPP

I couldn't order gold nugget (nor Shasta gold or Yosemite gold) because it is under license and I don't have a license agreement.  Can an individual get a license agreement?  Also Shiranui continues to be back ordered.

Thanks, Millet.  There are some citrus trees here at Walmart and they are clearanced to 50% off but I don't think anybody is going to buy them, so I'll wait until they go down to 75% off.  They are on trifoliate rootstock but i don't know if they are FD.

Are these FD big enough to start grafting?

If anybody wants bud wood from CCPP, I will be ordering tomorrow .  I will forward to non-protected areas only.  I plan to order NZ lemonade, Tahitian pummelo, Gold Nugget and maybe a red grapefruit.  Any other suggestions?  PM me to order.  It will be after the 21st before I forward.  Van

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Will these mango seeds sprout

What are they?  Are they any good for rootstock?  Being in the middle of the country, we take what ever is available.

Got some of these form Whole Foods a few weeks ago.  I thought they had excellent flavor.  They had about 3-4 seeds per fruit.

If I were to grow these seeds out, would they grow out poly or mono embryonic?  What are the implication of mono vs poly?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: How about a satsuma in zone 7 on a south wall?
« on: April 25, 2016, 12:27:26 AM »
I saw an Arctic Frost and an Orange Frost at Whole Foods today.  They were $13 each.  Any comments on taste?  Seems cheap enough to experiment with.  I think they are on their own root stock since I didn't see a graft line.  I've also order two Xie Shan from Harris. I plan to put one outside with protection at least for a few years.

Thanks Millet.  To clarify, I would like to grow it outside and eventually without protection once it gets established.  I wondering if there is enough of a microclimate to make it.  We know that most of the heat of the GH is going out the glass.  So maybe there is just enough heat to get the avocado and the satsuma through the winter.

I'll check out Harris.  Van

Cold Hardy Citrus / How about a satsuma in zone 7 on a south wall?
« on: April 18, 2016, 11:48:18 AM »
I posted this question regarding an avocado in the Tropical fruit section.  Basically the answer was you never know until you try.  So if I'm going to try an avocado, I should be able to do a satsuma as well (maybe even better).

The current plan is to plant them on the south wall of the green house.  I will put a clear pool cover over the green house in the winter which will extend over the outside trees at least for a few years to get them established.

I'd like to get Xie Shan.  Anybody know a source for this or will I have to graft it?

Any thoughts?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: How to get the trunk thicker
« on: April 16, 2016, 08:06:32 AM »
Thanks for all the replies.  Taking what you guys have said and doing some research on bonsai websites, I've cut the tree just above the second branch.  We'll see next year what it will look like.  Van

Based on recent discussion here, I want to try grafting longan.  I have limited space in GH, so a cocktail tree would make most sense if possible.  So if somebody is willing to send me a pencil size piece, I'd really appreciate it.  DR is giving vegetative growth now, so I figure now as good a time as any.
Thanks, Van.

I bought these trifoliate a couple of months ago on eBay.  They seem to be doing well but no new growth yet.
How do I get the trunk thicker in preparation for grafting?  How long will it take before graft able?
Thanks. Van

I got my Kona Sugarloaf and Elite Gold TC from Florida Hill Nursery.  It took them exactly 2 years to flower.  I may have some slips in 3-4 months but I don't know if I can send to CA.  Van

Here is a pic of my Kona Sugarloaf.  It should be ready in about July.  It had some red in the leaves but it has all disappeared after flowering. Also the leaves were initially smooth but now they a starting to be jagged.

Here is a pic of my Elite Gold.  It's interesting to note how many slips on the Elite Gold and none on the Sugarloaf.

Thanks.  It'll be interesting to see how the fruit is.  At least, if not good, then I have rootstock to graft to.

If they have scion but won't send out of state, I'll have them send to my parents in L.A.  Then they can forward to me.  We'll see if they even answer me.

I too am looking for scion.  Patrick, I just sent you a PM.

I sent a request to Epicenter Nursery for Jan Boyce, Queen and Pinkerton, but so far I have not heard back.

I'm looking for any exotics with great taste.  I have limited space in the GH.

I looking a peach blossoms last week and I noticed this.  Sorry for the bad pic but I refuse to get a smarter phone when my blackberry gets the job done.  I planted some type of peach maybe 5-10 years ago and I thought it died.  It was some type of yellow skinned small peach(no red at all).  It ripen about the end of June.  I  piled up a bunch of farm implements over here and it got overgrown.  It bloomed and now has fruit on it.  The original tree also bloomed but not as vigorously. The original, I think, is the curvy one.   I thought it was interesting.  Any thoughts?

Down here in NOLA.  They have these avo at HD.  Thinking about get 2-3 and trying one outside the other one in the GH.  I'll graft the varieties on to each tree.  How do these taste?  Any thoughts.   I can make a makeshift GH around the outside one for a few years.

Just had this for lunch.  It had 13 seeds.  I bit into one and the other was really small.  I've got another one at home.
