Title: Site Outage
Post by: Cookie Monster on July 16, 2018, 04:39:32 PM
A quick heads-up on the recent outage:

GoDaddy shut us down when our database surpassed 1GB, and it took several calls to support to get it restored. For the meantime, I've disabled the built-in full-text engine (which is used to make searches run more quickly), since it used nearly 600MB worth of DB space. Removing that got us back under the magical 1GB threshold. Because of this, searches will run a little more slowly than usual, and we encourage you to use the google search over the forum search.

Moving forward, we will need to eventually upgrade our hosting plan to a VPS (virtual private server), which is more expensive. But disabling the search indexing buys us time.

Whatever the cost may be, im pretty sure most of us will contribute.

Thanks, Jeff.

How about hosting a "plant and plant material sale" like the rare fruit councils do at meetings with all sale proceeds going towards the increased cost for the virtual server upgrade?  Yes, this will mean people would be "donating" their material but I think many would be up for it.

Thanks for the update Jeff. Rob, that’s a great idea. Count me in on donating something for fundraising.

Thanks for the support, guys. Yah, we'll see what Patrick and Sheehan want to do, but that could work. The cost was going to be around $250 for the first year, which isn't horrible. But they also wanted $99 for the migration :-(.

Am I the only person who thought maybe I got individually banned. The error message
was new and said something about my address. I thought maybe I pissed someone off???

I had my wife try it and she couldn't get on either then I was really bummed imagining
the end of this forum? I will be glad to pitch in

I also had  just ordered some new seeds, I know I said I wasn't going to start any more projects this
year but I promise this is the last project what's 20 more seeds?

I thought I got banned too  ;D. I am also open to helping donate as well. This forum has provided a place to communicate with people around the world about topics which we are all interested in, which would be harder to have without a forum like this.

Yep.  Have done so in the past and would be glad to donate again.  This is one of the best places to link up for tropical growers.

Appreciate your support Jeff and that of the other admins.

The last few days I have felt withdrawal because the Forum was down. I never realized how much I love this place until it was gone. What a relief it is that it’s up. That’s no joke. I’m very serious.

I was also wondering why access was blocked with the vague language used and am happy to see it was a site problem rather than an individual blocked access.

I would really miss the opportunity to see other peoples opinions of their fruit preferences and the new varieties being frequently presented.

I know I also have my opinions and differ from some others on the forum. I personally oppose name calling and insulting people for their opinions regardless of their extent of plant & other knowledge. However, I acknowledge that some of the most plant knowledgeable are occasionally more expressive of unnecessary adjectives delivered to parties giving opinions or asking questions.

In the future, I will try to decrease my opinions of the situations and ignore irrelevent material out of my control presented by others. Sorry if I offended any in the past...

Thanks everyone for your forum support.

Setup a simple "go fund me" page and count me in. this is very valuable forum.. Heck money that could be raised will get you a new high end server and possibly lots of feature rich site.

By the way, have you considered shopping around for another site host?  The competition is fierce and prices can vary greatly.  I've used Innoscale, (https://www.innoscale.net (https://www.innoscale.net)), for years to host my business site and they are priced very competitively and my site has always been problem free.

I like Rob's idea of a plant sale. I have some to donate. Also maybe a "Contributing member" or "Supporting member" in addition to "Member" "Hero" monikers?

I am in for go fund me but rather send funds direct so u all get 100%. This site and members have made the learning curve soooo much faster. Have spent countless hours researching and reading old post. Have also met some cool people here that have been great help along the way.  Too valuable an asset to let it go away!

Thanks for all your support! We've got an awesome group of members here.

I like the "contributing member" moniker idea.

We're up for renewal in Dec. I'll talk with Sheehan and Patrick to figure out whether that will be the time to pull the upgrade trigger.

Thanks again.

How easy is it to set up a "go fund me" page?
