Momordica charantia is back
« on: May 19, 2012, 11:24:39 PM »
Hi,

It's an endless battle to eradicate bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) on my property. I thought I had them all gone and now they are popping up again.

I don't care that they have twice the potassium of bananas and is also rich in vitamin A and C, I just don't like them and I want them gone.

tomas these are some young domestic bitter melons I grow but I have the feral type like in your pictures coming up everywhere.I can't control it or tell it apart from my self seedling domestic ones. They are a declared pest here and I wonder if gac fruit in the same genus could also be a pest as it is starting to be grown around much more.

Pull them up before they fruit as the seeds stay viable for a few years.Glyphosate herbicide even when very dilute knocks them over easier than most weeds.

One of the most horrendous weeds in one of my orchards. Herbicides kill only the surface plants, thousands of seeds in the soil keep coming up for many years, and the plants pop the seeds far and wide from where originally growing. Continuos mowing doesn't seem to do much good either.

The bain of my property is:  These vines grow back quicker than I can pull them off.

Virginia Creeper -- Parthenocissus quinquefolia
Wild Grape
Eastern Poison Ivy - Toxicodendron radicans spp. radicans

especially heinous: this grows incredibly fast and its wraps itself over everything-it even wrapped around out boat trailer!
Air-Potato -- Dioscorea bulbifera

gac is considered invasive exotic near me in FL, so yes I'm sure it could be.
