this is why they call me lycheeluva!!!
« on: May 20, 2012, 11:57:12 PM »
thats 18 pounds of mauritius on the left and 10 pounds of brewster on the right and if you look closely, you can see the outline of a few more pounds of lychees hidden away in the bottom draw. these will only last us 2-3 days.

Youre lucky to have them already.  I was in Miami this past weekend and Pine Island Nursery had some lychees for sale (they said they were sweethearts) but they were tart and picked too early.

Jack- I dont eat that many during the day because they are too messy to eat at work, but at night, I'll eat about 5  pounds in one sitting while watching tv.
those mauritious are now completely gone. i gave about a third to a friend and my wife and I ate the rest last night! on to the brewster tonight  and then a refil tomorrow morning!

Do they have competitive lychee eating contests? Maybe you should train for that.  ;D

never had one, LL, but I can't deny you are completely addicted!  For some reason I don't cross the mango border into unchartered islands very often....although, I had a silly little loquat the other day at my friends house which was LOADED with fruta and it tasted scrumptous and it was ONLY a ever-common loquat....

I'm sure I'm missing many things to add to my addiction..... ;D

GOOD FOR YOU!

Enjoy your heaven while it lasts.......FangFruitee

I can't think of anyone on this forum that will go against you (anyone out there want to take Lycheeluva on?!?) I can honestly say that is one contest I will lose with you as my opponent! But, I will be happy to root for you... ;D

LL! That's a no messing around haul of fruit you've got there! Quick question: are you buying these by the crate?

I'm going to go to the Chinese grocery here to see if they can order some lychees for me. What variety should I ask for? What should I expect to pay (more or less) for a box?

jealous,

Dave

Dave:
If I pay them wholesale, I pay about$2.50 a pound. On Canal St they are currently around $5 a pound but that will come down to around $3.50 a pound in a week or two.
Of course, all bets are off as to what you would get charged in Aruba.
My fave lychee is mauritius. it is also the fave of everyone I give samples too. but brewster is very good to. personally, the only lychee that i can't eat in bulk, is hak ip.
i would ask them to supply you with 75% mauritius and 25% brewster

Nice - thanks for the info. It looks like the store down here does business with a distributor in the states called http://www.freshpoint.com/ so I'm hoping I'll be able to get some sent down here with the grocery's weekly produce shipment.

Think again! I eat lychees all day long--no problems, except without shelling out the big bucks. HAHA Gotta go wash my sticky lychee juice hands right now!  ;D

The gluttony displayed in this post is ridiculous and disgusting.  How can one person consume such a mass quantity of fruits and then, to compound matters, gloat here in the forum.  I, for one, will not sit idly by and take this kind of abuse. I'm going into the other room and ponder the depths of my jealousy. You should be ashamed.

I would add, may you choke on a chicken tongue...but since you are passing up on the best tasting of them all, have fun with your large seeds  ;) ;D 8)

Saw a small sign posted by a local road and followed the arrow on the sign to the growers house and bought them. Eight bucks a pound, not a great deal but I had to have my lychee fix...I'm hoping that the price comes down in coming weeks as the season unfolds.
