Candidates for my future multigraft mangoes
« on: May 25, 2016, 09:00:01 AM »
I am starting to become limited in space for my mango trees so I am looking for suggestions to graft on to the ones I have in the ground. Most importantly, I want to match the growth habit of the tree, but I also want the best of the best that is available in terms of flavor complexity and something that will lengthen the harvesting season.

I currently have the following in the ground (or soon to be):
- Pickering
- NDM#4
- Maha Chanok
- Fruit Punch
- Malika
- Lemon Zest
- Venus

So far, I am interested in adding Sweet Tart and Imam Pasand to the collection.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Sweet tart is a must and if you want an Indian mango go with amrapali or sindhiri.....I was disappointed with Imam passand last year.

I'm not as experienced as others but i'll give it a shot based on what i've learn so far
- Pickering - Francis Hargrave
- NDM#4 - ? Not a vigorous grower in my yard, big space between nodes,
- Maha Chanok - Providence
- Fruit Punch- ?
- Malika - Kesar
- Lemon Zest - Dupuis, Peach Cobbler, Harvest Moon, Maybe ST,
- Venus - Ugly Betty

If there is a Lemon Zest involved in a cocktail tree, I suggest to do like I did. Wait a year or so until the tree gets established and than graft on the central leader because LZ is a vigorous, straight up grower that does not lend itself easily to pruning. bsbullie mentioned that like 100 times already.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. Please keep them coming. I thought of a Lemon Zest/Sweet Tart combo but I wasn't sure if it would work so I appreciate any input. I realized the my Malika, NDM4, and Maha seem to grow pretty slow and steady.

Sweet Tart and Lemon zest are both upright growers but ST is less vigorous.

I'm making a multigraft tree with, Lemon Zest, Peach Cobbler, and Dupuis. (I think Harvest moon might be another good canidate for the tree, but three is enough for me....for now ;))
Just hoping the grafts take. ;D
