Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chocolate trees
« on: June 18, 2012, 05:13:25 PM »
About 2 months ago I started growing my first Cacao trees. I've been away from home for the past month and a half to JRTC to prep for my deployment to Afghanistan. They look absolutely awesome. I have sooo many seedilings that are about 1 foot tall! I have approx. 85 of them. If anyone is interested please let me know. I dont have room for all of them and when im gone for my deployment they will get huge so if anyone wants any of them let me know. Here are a few pictures. I hope you enjoy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Update on my Chocolate Trees!
« on: May 14, 2012, 05:19:55 PM »
Last time i posted on here my trees were suffering from shipping shock but since then they have been thriving well and growing like a weed! My oldest one looks like its trying to grow its top canopy, which is comical to me because its only 3 feet tall. The other is like 6 inches taller and is growing straight up! Heres a few pictures.

Ok, as of so far I have:
2- 3 feet tall trees
38- red strain seeds about to sprout
41- yellow strain seeds about to sprout

I opened the pods, stripped the seeds and planted them on Thursday. I looked at them today and uncovered my "test" seeds and I seen roots and 2 inches long in each test cup!!! Hopefully they will sprout of the ground here within the next few days! Im really excited for them to sprout.

Heres a picture of the new addition!!! My new TREE ( on the left ). Its taller than my first one. And a picture of the seeds in the containers. just waiting for them to sprout! The pods came from www.montosogardens.com very highly recommend. Great looking healthy pods. Great looking seeds. BTW the seeds I had there were two different strains. The BIG seeds are a red cacao tree strain. And the smaller seeds were from a Yellow Cacao tree strain. Ill keep you updated on the seedlings. BTW is anyone interested in the seedlings when they sprout and get big enough to ship?

How are your seedlings doing? The young growth may just have shocked from change in climate when you brought it home. are you able to keep the humidity a little higher?

It seems to be doing fine now. I finally got my cacao pods today. i cut them open and got those seeds planted.

It drains fast but the sphagnum moss retains moisture. Do you think distilled water would work? or natural spring water?

Distilled or spring water should be fine. If you have too much sp. moss the mix could get too acid very fast as sp. moss is very low pH, i think around 4, and cacao likes pH around 6.

it was like a half/half mix. I dont want to remove the tree seeming how I just planted it on friday im sure its already stressed enough. Is there a way that I can test the pH of my soil?

actually yes the first time i did use tap water. I didnt have time to let it set out. Its been 4 days since I watered it do you think i should water it?? I checked today's humidity. It didnt get lower than 80% humidity today. so should i let my water sit for a few days or use distilled water?

Does anyone have an answer for this??Its like 50% humidity during the day and almost 100% during the night. I havent watered the plant since friday. The soil still feels moist to the touch. I did put the tree in miracle gro cactus potting mix (only fast draining soil i could find) and mixed it with sphagnum peat moss

I have a quick question. My leaves at the tips are turning brown and these little things sticking off between the leaf and main trunk are turning yellow also. Does anyone have an idea as to why this is doing this??

Hey soren ,,

Have you dealed with jim west before ,, as his seeds are very cheap and he is selling in 100 seeds packets ,, its like having a nursery ,, lool ,,

Cacaguy ,,, of course his seeds are growable ,, otherwise why would he sell them ,, lol ,, am kidding ,, his seeds are of very high quality having a germination rate of nearly 100% ,, and they usually come in a nice shape although it stays long time in transit between Hawaii and Egypt.

Taking in consideration that cacao seeds are hard to germinate and they never germinated with me as for the humidity required or else.

Amr

well the reason i asked is because people buy their own cacao seeds and make homemade chocolate with them. thats whys i was asking. does jim west have a website?

Completely agree to that, I love the pulp! Some of the other species should have more plup; Oscar I am not sure which species you have for sale, but otherwise I can recommend Jim West who has several rare species.

The only other theobroma species i have for sale besides cacao is Theobroma bicolor, Pataxte, in english confusingly called white cacao or Peruvian cacao. Pulp on that tastes totally different, more like a chempadek. Jim West is coming to visit me here in a few months so will try to get him to bring me some other species of theobromas. He brought me some before but i blew it and the plants didn't get established.

Who is jim west? Also are your cacao seeds growable?

I have Red, Green and Yellow seedlings.  One of which fruited for the first time a couple of years ago (here in the sub-tropics) only to be frozen in our brutal winter that and the following year. The tree lost major limbs but has recovered but has not bloomed since.

Harry

Harry, do you have an idea where I can locate cacao pods that are fresh and unopened?? Ive been looking around for some time now and can not find any at all.
