Title: Fruit Cocktail aka 28-18
Post by: bsbullie on July 08, 2018, 11:26:34 PM
No weight on fruit but if I had to guess, I would say around 12 oz.  It was perfectly ripened.  Aroma was of that of a Capri Sun and taste followed suit (only thing to figure out is which flavor).  Fruit was nice and sweet with the type of acidity found in one of those Capri packets.  Texture was semi-firm and juicy.

I liked this one better than Fruit Punch.

Great, another mango I need to squeeze into my yard, lol. I have so much respect for the Zill family. They keep pumping out these great tasting Mangos selected for excellent taste. I can’t imagin what the mango world would be like without all the great varieties they released. Thanks for the info Rob!

Note - this mango has not been released.  I do not have any info to share as to if and/or when.

It does remind  me of fruit cocktail and agree that it has a taste better than fruit punch.

Not as large a fruit but better imo

Thought it was second best after E 4

Any info on whether it’s Monoembryonic or Polyembryonic?

First off, its Karen Michelle.   Second, there is a post about favorite mangoes of 2018.  This is a post specifically about the Fruit Cocktail mango (although I guess it is not obvious from the title of the thread).

Please people, take your hijacks elsewhere...

Simon...I saw a picture of a seed...its mono.  It's a little hard to see in this pic though. Squam's website shows 28-18 to be a Jakarta seedling.

The Fruit Cocktail mangos I brought home did not have any tartness (but were still fine and will make excellent mango Margaritas come Thanksgiving).

Should I have cut them open when still firm?

Dont confuse acidity with tart.  You can have an acidic component without tart.  I definitely did not detect any tartness but it did have an acidic nuance.  I know I keep using the Capri comparison but try any fruit puch drink and while it is very sweet, it will have an acidic component blended in.  The fruit I had were not super soft but definitely fully ripe.

As I stare this morning at an endless tabletop of mangoes that I've lost all desire to eat after gorging for a month or two, I'm going to pretend I didn't see this post and wipe it from my memory. 14 mango trees seems to be sufficient for one family.

Those we had were on the firm side.

Took one bite and it was wonderful.  To me it tastes like the syrup from the fruit cocktail can.  All the flavors blended into something unique.  The mutple tastes where one sticks out more for just a moment.

Top tier for sure outpacing some of the usual suspects.

If I have to dig up a great tree this one goes in.

As soon as one of you fools offer the same knowledge and insight as Rob does into this forum, then you too will have the right to be a dick! The amount of help he offers all of us is nuts... if you live in South Florida he is available at either Excalibur or Walter's place to help with just about anything needed related to fruit and fruit trees. He has personally helped me more times then I can count!
Thank you Rob, keep up the good work!

I had a slice of FC and yes, it was excellent.  Did the name given take me back to youthful days eating FC or was it the fruit in its own right?  We may never know...

I tasted Fruit Cocktail mangos twice this week.  They were plenty good enough to enjoy often, but not at all top tier to my tastes.  A bit stringy also.

So if I've had Capri Sun by circumstance at various gatherings in my life, but never once craved it and thought, "I must go out and buy Capri Sun," does this mean I can skip this mango?

If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

The taste is enjoyable, but Yes, you can skip this one. (Unless it turns out to be more productive and more disease-resistant than all the other good mangos.)

Requisite disclaimer: Your Mileage May Vary.

I would skio Fruit Punch and go with Fruit Cocktail.
