Hello grafting buddies, its grafting time again.
Anyone would like to do a group order? Last time Oscar charged $10/variety, $100 min total order plus shipping.
Please look up Oscar's collection "fruit lovers" and post here.
Thanks
-
I'm interested if we can get enough of an order. I'll look up the list later.
-
I would also be interested in some scions. I would also be interested in an air layer or two if there is any interest by anyone else.
-
Here's the link to that thread http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=84 (http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=84)
I'm not sure what I want to grow. Maybe try a different variety of lychee.

Just to clarify, it's $5 per scion, but minimum 2 scions of each variety.
-
So has anyone shortlisted what they want? Let's get it done.
-
I just signed up on the forum.
I would be interested in avocado scionwood but need to research on which variety from Hawaii will grow best in SoCal, clay soil for me.
I see Sharwil sold locally but the other types ?
Behgarden - How would this work and where are you located in SoCal?
Thanks
-
JF, cuban007, and I am in Orange County/Riverside with few more folks.
-
How can I verify if Oscar has the scionwood available for Murashige, Kahaluu and possibly Sharwil.
Those would be the one's I want in the group buy.

Yes have them.
-
Oscar,
Good to hear, Hope they are still pre-budding for grafting.
behlgarden,
I'm in San Gabriel Valley, City of Walnut.
Will you be taking the lead on this group buy.
Let me know so I can include my order.
You can PM me, Thanks.
-
I'll have to pass on this round. Too much to take care of already. I was originally thinking about some lychee scions or air layers.
othater I have my plants in Covina. Maybe we can visit each other sometime. I'm in Burbank during the week.
-
Would the organizer be willing to ship a small order of mango scions up to the San Jose area for me? I'd pay all costs associated.
Unfortunately, we don't have many folks up here interested in mango scions.
-
Just checking to see if the group buy is still happening?
-
Behl,
I'm in for Rapoza (2) and Pram Kai Mea (2) if this is going to happen.
Come on CA folks, this is a great opportunity!
Richard

I'm in for some scions, how many more pieces do we need to get the order through? Oscar, do you have any lychee air layers grown on special tables? Thanks, Simon
-
i need some avocado scions. Im in san gabriel valley

Simon, air layers are done way up on the trees, not on tables. Anyhow temporarily discontinued doing air layers till i can catch up on some other work. Might be available again to do them in about 3 months or so. Thanks,

Yes thanks, all is well, just currently under going the usual spring rush. Even though very busy i love this time of year as plants start to go into hyper drive fast growth mode. :D

Simon
I sent you a PM. To summarize the group needs to have a group leader. This person will handle payment and any correspondance with me, and will have the shipment mailed to their address. The reason for the group buy is so i only have to deal with one person. That person then distributes the scions when they arrive and handles any questions and correspondance. Thanks,
-
Behl,
Check your PM, I would like to see this group buy happen.

Hello all, I have compiled the list below. Please read carefully. I think we should do two separate group orders as Oscar wants $100 min for the order.
1. We got San Diego Area with 18 scions (if Simon-grow) doesn't back out. If Simon does back out, we got 2. Rtreid and desimango whose combined order would be 10 scions. Here I recommend if Simon is in, Sand Diego order it, otherwise I can run one big order.
2. In IE/LA area, I am going to place the order.
Here is what we have:
San Diego Area: (18 scions)
1. Rtreid - Rapoza (2) and Pram Kai Mea (2) - $20 (San Diego)
2. simon_grow - Avocado- Kahaluu, Longan-Biew Kiew, Mango-Carrie, Fairchild, Kent, Neelam, Okrung – total 14 scions, $70 plus shipping (San Diego)
OC/LA/IE area: (26 scions)
1. intel415 – kahaluu, linda, Yamagata, Malama, Nishikawa, Murashige Avacados, 12 scions, $60 plus shipping, Los Angeles
2. My Neighbor – R2E2, and White Piere, 4 scions, $20 – Inland Empire
3. emegar - Salathiel lychee and Biew Kiew Longan, 4 scions, $20 plus shipping (Inland Empire)
4. othater - Murashige and Kahaluu avocado, 4 scions, total $20 plus shipping.
5. intel415 – Avacado, what variety? (San Gabriel)
Northern Cali
1. desimango - 3 Amrapali, 3 Mallika, Java Plum, Jambu (Syzygium cumini) - 10 seeds $6, 6 scions $30, Northern Cali.
Simon - Please pose here if you are backing out.
intel415 - What variety avocado you want?
desimango - Note that there will be additional shipping (secondary) from either San Diego OR Corona to you,
Can others confirm their orders here again? This is what I have so far. I am yet to pick what I want but I will do that once I am ready to order.
-
Behl,
My order is correct- Murashige and Kahaluu.
Also PM'd you.
Thanks,
othater
-
Hey bro, i want to change my order to
Kahaluu
Nishikawa
Murashige
i assume its 5 dollars each
3 x 5 = 15 and plus shipping
thanks
-
No its $5 per scion, 2 scion per variety min. So its $30 for you
-
Hello all, I was going to back out and place my own order so that I didn't hold up people from getting their scions. I work two jobs and don't know when I would be able to ship out the other San Diego orders once I have received them. Seeing that there are only two other San Diego orders, I can still place my order if the other two members are ok with me possibly delaying the shipping of their scions until the first Thursday after I receive the scions. If I receive the scions on Wednesday, I should be able to ship out the next day. If I received the scions on Friday, I would ship out the following Thurs.
I'm still at work right now, I'll check back on this thread later tonight to see what Rtreid and Desimango would like to do.
Simon
-
San Diego folks, please reply your posts. Simon, can they simply pick up from you if local.
-
Yes, picking up locally would be best.
Simon
-
Behl,
My order is correct.
I can do what ever is needed. I can pick them up locally or drive to LA to get them. Just let me know what I need to do. Are you near Mimosa LA nursery? I really need to go by there again!
I could also add some scions to make an order with Simon_grow complete.
Richard
-
My part of the order looks fine. Thanks, Behl!
-
Please take R2E2 off list of ordered scions. Don't have that cultivar. Thanks,
-
Great, I will send the order to Oscar sober can get the invoice and then everyone pays for it.
Simon, could you please order yours and Richards dirrctly as you two are local and this would expedite your delivery from Oscar and will not have tobwait for me to ship to you.
I am in Inland Empire and work in Los Angeles. Those in LA can pick up fromy home or my office. Wait for another confirming post and PM from me.
Thanks
-
Sounds good, Richard, I will probably place the orderwed night or Thurs if that's ok with you. We will have enough to make the order go thru, I may be adding some scions.
-
Simon,
Sign me up for Rapoza, Manzanilla and Pram Kai Mea.
Thanks,
Richard

-
Hi everyone! Is it still too late to join in on the order?
not too late to join, we haven't pay yet.
-
The San Diego order has been placed and paid for so it is too late to join.
Simon
-
Thanks for the replies. I was asking about the OC order, but on second thought, I'm going to hold off on ordering the scions until my grafting skills improve. Good luck with your orders! :)
-

If anyone should speak if this order is open or close is this man.....he is the one who put it all together!
-
I would like to have the order placed and payed before Monday. Thanks,
-
Sure. Everyone who ordered, please send me pm for PayPal address. All payments should be received before I place the order.
Thanks
-
I don't see any responses or money being sent to me other than two folks
Please those who requested send the money asap, otherwise order will be canceled.
-
Sorry, I'm afraid i can't afford 50 for 6 scions, 30 was reasonable. Anyways i rather go buy a 15 gallon cado 50 dollars.
-
No worries. What about others?
-
FYI -
Due to lack of response from most who showed interest backing out or not responding, I have decided to cancel the order. I will refund the monies to those who sent me money already. With count of scions declined, cost per scions has gone up. I apologize about this but I dont have time to wait around while all I was trying to do was facilitate the order. If folks are still interested, please coordinate among yourselves and run the order.
Thanks
-
No problem, Behl. Thank you for your efforts.
James
-
James, get your cherimoya budwood. I pruned and this is the only chance to get it
-
Behl,
Thanks for spending your time to get this together. Disappointed that so many backed out.
Maybe someone here has the various Hawaiian avocado/fruit varieties that will be willing to give or sell seeds/scions locally?
-
I am sure folks here do. I am going to try to get few from CRFG Orange County and otherwise we can do another order sometime in the future.
-
Main reason we backed up due to ridiculous prices. Thanks for the effort though.
I have a small sharwil i can give you some scions in the future. Right now its just pushing a lot of flowers and lost most of the leaves. Maybe i should pinch off the flowers and let it grow some woods.
-
Some people enjoy growing and eating fruit much more than packing and shipping things. Charging a little for scions is a way to weed out those that are casually wanting them from those that are really serious. It really takes more effort to do the same old thing year after year.
I know you meant the ag inspection and shipping costs are ridiculous. Cost of shipping stuff to HI is nuts too.
On the bright side, I might have more people in the group order when I'm ready to order from Oscar in the future.
Yeah Sharwil you can get locally instead of bothering Oscar for it. Mine failed after something fell on top of the grafted seedling. :(

You can get whatever you want just let me know two weeks before the meeting and we'll have it for you.
-
Behl,
Sorry, I never kept up on this thread and didn't know we were to send the money; I thought you would send me the cost and paypal address via PM.
Sad to see this cancelled. :'(
Appreciate all your efforts bud.

For the record $8 a scion shipped and done legally is a pretty good deal.. Even here in Florida most of the collections in Homestead will charge around $4 a piece for budwood if you collect it yourself. If you factor in the legal paperwork and shipping, not to mention the selection of pieces suitable for grafting, that price is pretty good.

I totally agree! You are not going to find the selection that Oscars has at homedepot or clausens...to play you gotta pay.
-
For the record, I'm still willing to get this going again.
-
minimum 2x per variety 16 goes right there.
we should split per variety with 2 people, i don't need a spare scion. Anyone interested?

I would split too but the two I want are the same as reality and yourself. Murashige and Kahaluu.
I guess if another member is looking for the same I can split.

Some suggestions:
A large percentage of total costs is in shipping and ag inspection. If you can increase total number of scions then cost for everyone per scion goes down. You could also considering opting out of express mail, which is expensive and was included in the last estimate. You will probably get the package in 3 days rather than 2, but should still be fine. Personally i don't see why anyone would want to get just one scion of each? That means you need to have 100% success rate to get a take. If you get 2 scions of each at least you have a 50-50 chance of a take.
-
I agree a single scion will likely spell doom unless in the hands of a master grafter.

avocados are easy to graft need not to be a master grafter. If you don't know how to do it, check out carlos videos on youtube, it helped me a lot, im new to grafting, and my grafts all took :)

The conditions of a scion from far away is different from what we get locally. It'll be trying to get acclimated to the dryness as well as trying to heal.
I agree avocados are not difficult. Only 2 of 3 failed for me after some bamboo trellis fell on them.
-
Sorry, I'm afraid i can't afford 50 for 6 scions, 30 was reasonable. Anyways i rather go buy a 15 gallon cado 50 dollars.
With a single "cado" for 50.00 you only get 1 variety. With the scions you will get different varieties and not have to buy several trees which would cost way more. : )

Dude, I'm willing to spend a lot on buying different trees especially 15s or above couple of hundreds not a problem for me because i think it gives a better return, money well spent there.
I agree with you you get different 3 varieties rather then 1, but tell me how long it takes to reach to a 15 gallon or just a regular 5gs that sell in local nurseries. Assume all of your varieties take, will they survive? and not including you have to take care of the grafts, water properly etc... can you guarantee you will get a lot of fruits from newly grafted scions compare to a 5/15 gallons? Compare all of these to a well established trees that will give you a lot of fruits in no time. 50 dollars for scions i think its not a smart choice, i rather spend it wisely. I regret i bought 5 gallons avocados i should pull the trigger on 15s or above. Now at least 2 more years i have to wait for my 5gs to get me a reasonable fruits production.
Maybe you can spend couple of hundred on all of the varieties and resale $5 per scions to us? i'm more then will buy it if 6 each (extra dollar for you) and i will pay for shipping too. This is exactly what i wanted to do ids to split orders with someone to reduce cost for same scions. Let me know if you willing to do that. Thanks.

Folks chose to graft to improve their inferior fruiting tree to a more productive tree of their choice. there should be no debate over what's cheaper and what's worth it. try and argue with someone who has a 15 x 20 yard that he should plant 5 mango trees to get 5 varities, not possible, but he can have a 5-in-1 and enjoy all of them and leave room for another fruit kind. expensive in ones eyes and ears could mean opportunity for another. so lets not debate this issue. There are people who trade scions at no charge on this board while there are folks who do this for living. So lets respect all opinions.

Agree....and people should have a more little respect for their fellow members and address them by their screen name not as DUDE.
