Looking for trees like Gevuina avellana but apparently they can't tolerate long hot humid summers.

My Gevuina seedlings got verry dry soil in the pots after i moved them in full sun and nothing happened.
The soil was soo dry that after i wet the pot 3 times until the water flushed out from the bottom, was still hard as concrete.
Then i filled a bucket of water and kept every pot submerged in it until the soil got wet.
Biggest pest i had with Gevuina were the slugs that like to eat the seedling like nothing else ive seen.
I dont know of otther cold hardy proteaceae like gevuina is ,that make edible nuts.

Tried Gevuina here in Florida a couple times, and even in somewhat cool shaded locations they died.

It needs acid soil.
