ID: plinia edulis?
« on: May 09, 2015, 05:32:50 AM »
I was at the botanical garden today and scrounged a few seedlings/sprouts from under a tree labelled myrciaria edulis. Just wanting a confirmation on id before I do the long wait. Didn't have a camera to take pictures of the parent tree unfortunately.

That isn't cambuca (Plinia edulis). Cambuca doesn't have fuzzy leaves like that.

Thanks for the quick reply, the tree was on a small seasonal creek and the seeds could have washed in from elsewhere, or the parent tree mislabelled.

It's a Eugenia. E. myrcianthes I believe. There are a few of them around the BG. The you g leaves are soft and furry the older leaves are hard and green. The fruit is large, orange and tastes mostly of raw onions with a hint of apricot.

Sounds like a real winner. Here's a question, the garden has some trees labelled kwai muk, some artocarpus lingnanensis. Are these synonyms or just nearly identical trees?

Synonyms. Though one does seem to yield slightly larger fruits than the other going by the labels.

So is this definitely not a Plinia edulis either? :'(
It had a round seed that broke in half and was a beautiful purple inside, the half's of the seed.still sprouted.

Shape of leaf looks like Plinia edulis.
Roundish seed sounds like Plinia edulis.
Interior of seed purple also sounds like Plinia edulis.

Thanks Oscar
My leaves are very fuzzy So thats why this thread had me abit worried. My seedling looks nothing like OPs seedling but its leaves are incredibly fuzy and soft. If you zoom in on the pic it is visible. The older leaves are browing I think due to crappy borehole water but the green parts seem less fuzzy than the young leaves.
