It is an orchid, which can be tricky for some folks.

It's a climbing orchid that needs to grow on a tree or some support.  Some nursery in SoCal will have it.  It is not easy to produce good quality vanilla.

It takes months to cure before they develop the aroma. Also there's the keeping a tropical orchid alive and pollinating it by hand. It's interesting to grow.

I'm growing it. Yes it's a tropical orchid. You also need to hand pollinate it to get pods. Then the pods need to be dried and cured to get final product. Not so easy, especially in Calif. Would be doable in a controlled greenhouse.

Very easy to grow in Hawaii.  I believe it likes lots of humidity and shade.  The tricky part is the hand pollination, but once you learn how to do it, it's pretty simple.

You throw a piece on the ground here and it climbs on the nearest tree and goes crazy. They don't set many pods without the hand pollination.

I'm growing it. The vine is very young still, so no orchids, but so far so good! I've keep a number of other orchids alive here so that prompted me to step up my game and try vanilla. It's growing up a palm that is right near my balcony, so as it gets old enough to start putting out flowers/pods, it will be right near where I can lean over and pick them off easily. The base is in a nice rich soil with plenty of coconut husk mulch, shady at the bottom and partially shady as it goes up. So we'll see how it does. Other orchids seem to like the area.

I grow mine indoors. One of my only orchids that doesn't require a greenhouse.

Wow lots of people growing it.  You guys growing it should post some photos if possible.  I want to see how shaded/exposed the plants.

Mine is squeezed into the back of my greenhouse.  Mostly shade.  It has been busy escaping its rack, and heading for the Nigerian walnut trellis...
