Yes, what I could AND should based on what the experts have grown and tasted.

Yes, what I could AND should based on what the experts have grown and tasted.
Dream is a really nice atemoya, outclasses Gefner in taste in my book, though productivity I can't comment on yet, since this year is the first year I should expect a half decent crop. That said, Dream didn't by any means try to fruit itself to death for me so far. A plant 1.5 yr in ground from a 7gal gave me three fruits last year with half-assed hand pollination.
I would add Lisa personally, as it is a really outstanding atemoya. Frank's Birula is an improved Lisa, but I don't know that there are any mature examples of it here in FL, so I'd consider it experimental in FL at this point. If it has more cherimoya genetics than Lisa, it may not fruit well in FL like many cherimoya. That said, I'm growing some both in pots and in ground, and so far it grows pretty well the same as Lisa for me.
-
Thanks Dom, I appreciate it. Anyone have experience growing the ones listed in FL?
-
I am pausing all new orders until Monday to get caught up. I will send out all paid orders by the weekend.
Thank you for your patience
-
I have dream and rollinia... Do you have any recommendations for those?
I know Rollinia doesn't like temps below 45F, at least my little seedlings don't.

They can easily take those temps what gets them here is the dry Santa Ana winds.....they need moister

Yeah, we got into the 30s about 2 months ago and it dropped its leaves but it's flushing just fine now

That is amazing to me. I would have thought Rollinia would not even try to bloom unless nights averaged in the 50's. Sounds like a good rootstock for California with leaf stripping in January!

With this biriba var. on this rootstock there is no need to strip.......like cherimoyas or atemoyas. I will post pic later I believe it still holding flowers. It is still 2 years away from release I have to fruit it and make sure the grafts doesn't reject the rootstock.
-
That sounds great Frank.....but what am I going to do with all of my extra time if I don't strip leaves any more? We'll all be patiently waiting for updates on this Rollinia. If this works, I'll probably die happy just growing fresh Cherimoya, Ilama, and Biriba in my own backyard!
-
I'm all caught up, the rest of the orders will go out tomorrow morning. As a bonus I threw in seeds of anona rosada
Once again, thank you for your patience.

Anyone in SD still want to place an order? I only need 5 scions. Let me know so we can do a joint order. Thanks.

I have not seen your message. You place is kind of 30 to 45 mins away from my area. What can we save when we order together? Sorry I sound silly, but just wonder
-
Hi dragon,
I found a new member molo who wants to do a joint order. You're more than welcome to do it with us. The saving is about $25 bucks for me since I don't need all 10 scions (limit 10). I don't even have enough rootstock to graft 10 anyways so it'll go to waste. Which part of town are you in? I work around the Mira Mesa area. You can stop by to pick up once the order arrive.
I'll wait until tomorrow to place the order with frank just in case other members want to join in.
-
Last orders have been shipped everyone has their confirmation number. Will be back Monday to start another round of orders. Let's keep it to 6 orders this week everyone will have a chance to place their orders . I will extend the anona scion sale until the end of March.
Thank you

I live around Mira mesa too. But can you tell me which one match with my criteria: sweet, big, and chewy? I already have African pride, red Israel and phet pakchong (I am not sure if that is real because it is not sweet. I love the big, sweet, chewy one I ate in VN, but I don't know it's name in America. Please help
-
The only sweet and chewy ones I know are: African pride, geffner, and Lisa.
Frank- do you have anything else to recommend him?

Why don't you clarify and say I've never sold you a seed.

Don't mean to thread jack, but what would be the best rootstock when grafting on a Cuban Fiberless scion, cherimoya or guanabana seedling? I have both and interested in purchasing a few scions.

It would be great if you could find a few photos Frank. I am still attempting to decide which Atemoyas to get. I definately want to get a Birula and Calostro....those sounded really good. The Choochie Island Atemoya has no information on it that I could find, so wondering what the fruit is like. I see that it is from Australia and probably named after the Choochiemudlo Island or maybe Choochie Island Resort. I had visions of the Choochie Island Atemoya being grown off the coast of Australia near the No Bikini Atoll and the fruit being named by Charo! ::)
-
waiting for the cherimoya list before finalizing my order ;D

good luck to you Bao. Expect explosive sweetness and chewiness from Randhir aka Jumbo Geffner. I like Pink Mammoth better
My pm was mediocre last year. Actually, I was a little disappointed after all the hype from Australia. I must be doing something wrong or the the tree is still small if you like it.

I've added geffner and Mihn atemoyas. I want to remind everyone one to add their address and varieties in their PayPal payments. I'm also requesting for anyone who lives in the LA or OC to pick up locally. Those of you that are in SD or SB come to Disneyland, Knotts or visit the new world famous Porto's that just open last week in Buena Park😀😀

Finally get to try frank's randhir today. OMG!!! What a feast for my wife and I with this 2-3 pounder! It was so juicy, sweet, chewy, not grainy, and big. Seeds to flesh ratio was very good. It was like eating 4-5 na when we were in vn. It had all of the characteristics that I look for in an atemoya. Such a delicious treat. I gave the two pink mammoth my parents. Will report back on the birula when I try it tomorrow. I'm OD on atemoya tonight. Thanks frank for this yummy treat. Can't wait to get more from you when available again.

Hi, JF,
Which cherimoyas are on the sweeter side and consistent from this list?
I have 3 gallon El bumpo from HD, but it may or may not be true labeling.
Is the Helmut available?
Also still interested to get the Calostro, Birula and Randhir wood if available.

They grow they just don't fruit. Har has mention he has fruited some variety in a pot at Excalibur. The ones that do well in similiar coastal climates with humidity in socal and Malaga spain
there are others but I forgot

Last year the ones he suggested might work in FL were Libby, McPherson, Spain and Cumbe. I've got all 4 growing, still very small. All basically went dormant both during the winter and the heat of summer.

Whatever, it's beautiful.

Seriously mark.it was grafted as Selma a few years ago but got this fruit which is very good. Btw there is nothing unique about Selma ....good fruit but not top tier imo. If you want something special try Fino de jete. This years version dethroned el Bumpo, Orton and pierce
-
How is that possible about Fino? That should signify everyone's taste buds are very different and trying to agree on the wide ranging variability of flavor and texture in Cherimoya varieties is impossible and fluid from year to year.
In peak season The Fino's in Jete while less than $1 a piece were ... Terrible, much better grown in CA oddly enough.

This was the consensus in 2 early tasting in OC. I have no idea what part of the world you are referring that you paid a $1 and it was terrible....chile ,Spain?? Fino has always been an excellent variety for me but This year it elevated to the top for many folks.....in any case, we'll have this discussion in another thread.

Good to know! I ordered 2 sticks of Fino from you yesterday (along with others like El Bumpo and Pierce). Good to know!
Think he was referring to Jete Spain.

dont want to hijack..but since its a popular thread i might get a quick answer....
after grafting onto seedlings should the plants be in full shade/ partoal shade or in sun?
also..is there any benefit to leaving a few leaves of the rootstock below the graft for energy?
thanks

On establish trees no problem. we have been much hotter than you guys with less humidity and I have one week old grafts taking. On small seedlings, by all means, shade them

Got my scions yesterday! ;D I started grafting yesterday on my cherimoya. Gonna continue the rest today.
What type of graft do you guys typically do on annonas? I'm doing the z-graft method on them because I got 100% success rate with it on my citrus, stone fruit trees, etc. this past couple of months.
Does T-bud graft work on them?
-
Frank great thread for a annona grafting newbie like myself!
so i grafted 3 days ago and I see some bud tips are now through the parafilm...can they take that quickly? or am i just seeing what i want to see..

That's store energy it's not uncommon. This is the best time of the years to graft anonas. it's very exciting to see those buds swell and push. On small potted tress keep shaded and make sure they don't dry up.

Done. Ed Self, master grafter and fruit grower did the dirty deed Frank, received today. Said the scions were some of the best he's seen. Many thanks! Appreciate the stick of Selma too. Is that the real deal as Ed said he shared a box of Selma with Houston growers a while back and they went nuts over the quality.

My best regards and congratulations to Ed......you guys are lucky to have him in the great state of Texas. Remember all these scions come from in ground establish trees, some 40 years old, so these scions are hard to beat. Selma is a wonderful fruit for some, I've had people tell me it's their favorite, but for me it's very average......but as our friend Rob always reminds us taste is subjective.

This service really speaks well for your character Frank. Not here to butter anyone up, but the opportunity to get such fine sticks and genetics is truly welcomed and appreciated by all (and that includes the avocado scions I got from you).
Having said that I got a note from a SoCal cherimoya grower saying he doesn't find much difference in the varieties regarding taste. Yes, Rob is right, taste is subjective *depending* on many factors - climate, culture, location, etc.
-
Do you think cherimoya flavor differences are more subtle than mango?

For sure, I second this. Frank your prompt service and responses are extremely appreciated. Especially for me, a relatiive annona newbie who's been getting a little bored with mango, lychee, saps, citrus and other stuff in my yard..never been a huge annona fan outside a sugar apple here and there..but the opportunity you give to try new things has been great...haven't been this excited in my yard for a while like seeing all these different annona grafts taking...looking forward to growing these and trying different stuff you come out with.

you are off to a good start I can't see why these California atemoyas wouldn't work in FL.....keep us posted

received mine on thursday. I just grafted mine today. one tree with 5 varieties on it. First time grafting anon and have no idea what I'm doing. I did some mango grafting last year first time too and 3 trees were successful. we'll see.

I think everyone must find their own comfort zone regarding grafting styles and methods. For me its veneer, cleft or t-bud. Quality of wood, timing, sharpness of blades.....all that matters. Ed and I are now using what Carlos turned me onto for softer woods - avocado and younger mangos.....any kind of tender wood. That would be a Schick singe injector blade held in a #3 medium Excel or Xacto holder. I think for cambium unions to occur not only must there be a good match but an extremely clean, surgical type cut. You go bruising and crushing tissue and it aint gonna work.
Good luck!

Mark, Carlos wrote an article several years ago about the Shick set-up and i have been using his for soft wood all the time,I even bought a lot of extras blades just in case they quit making them.I do have to add a little tape to lock the blade a little better.Exacto have 2 models i use the heavy duty one.

I've had reports from Florida that Cumbe grows very well. Here they are starting to fruit and it looks like another variety battling for cherimoya supremacy.

Sam, only thing you have to understand is nearly 3 kilos! lol excellent taste and of course, hand pollination for max production.....this one has only been fruited by Behl early evaluate is promising but in a month I will have a tasting with a few members for the California cherimoya society

Excel holder works without any adjustments.
Carlos turned us onto the Schick, I turned him onto the WorkSharp. He got it, tried it, called and left a delighted message on my answering machine - "EEEENCREDIBLE" ! ;D He was using an old barber's stropping strap for sharping his tools and blades. This should be in every gardener's toolbox. It's not only great for a farm or gardener but for the home as it will sharpen about every kind of tool or blade with the same angle every time. I sharpen my Felco's in seconds, same with lopping shears. I use a 80 grit belt for tools (shovel, lopping shears, hand pruners) and a 300 grit for knives which includes my pocket knife and Wursthof kitchen knives.

Of my few very small cherimoya the Cumbe definitely has the best looking leaves at this point. Spain and McPherson are looking decent, but not nearly as green and full.

I had the cumbe 6-7yrs ago, it was really good flavor overall. They carry it in Chinatown SF for 5lbs$5/lb then. I think my seedling are going to give me fruit this year. Last year I got several flowers but no fruits. This year, I'm confident it will give me some fruits.
-
Amazing moyas and what an opportunity to try some. Had my first Booth's last night and they were incredibly delicious.
1. What's the difference between Campus and Campas, Campas being a Spanish commercial variety,
2. What's the story behind Cumbe? Genetics, pollination requirements, fruit quality, etc.
thanks

looking forward to hearing about your successes! I'm glad to know that the FL team is working on getting me=ore delicious annonas!

They don't sell Cumbe in the USA. What you probably had was Carmela cherimoya from Dario from cherimoya.com. He is the creator of some of these California seedlings from South America
Mark
Campus is mammillated and the other is smooth. It also has very few seed and it's semi self pollinated
'
The story is on the video I hope or someone in your family speak Spanish l. The video gives you a nice history of Cumbe cherimoya

Almost all the scions I got are starting to push now! ;D

Frank,
couple questions...generally speaking, how long before annona graft unions heal after pushing, to the point where i can remove the tape and parafilm?
Next question, looks like a little water from the rain made it under the parafilm from the holes caused by the buds pushing, and i see a little moisture collecting near the union..anything to worry about? rot/fungus etc?
-

If you wrapped your scions one wrap with parafilm like you should have (not 3 or so) there is no need to remove it. The buds will easily push thru.
-
hey Mark..i think i didnt explain well..
the buds are pushing through fine on the scion...I'm talking about the graft union of the stock and scion, and when to remove the grafting tape (i also wrapped the union with one go around of parafilm on top of the tape)...

as Mark said you don't have to worry about removing the parafilm it will disintegrate on its own
you have nothing to worry about those buds....let them push as hard as they can

Thanks but I mean the grafting tape at the union
when should that be removed? typically how long does it take to heal?
-
I remove the tape before it girdles the graft. Usually in a year but you should do it much sooner if your graft is growing really well. It's hard to give an exact time like when it grows more than 1.5ft It depends on how strong it's growing, which direction, and whether it's likely to get broken by birds, squirrels, rats if you took off the tape.
I'd say definitely not before 1-3 months.
-
Jani
Are you talking about green nursery tape? If that's what you are referring to a few weeks after it takes
-
Never remove the buddy/paradigm tape. It will expand as union expands.
-
ah got it, thanks!
-
ah got it, thanks!
Behl taught me a neat trick. fold your buddy tape in half and use like nursery tape to your graft instead of nursery tape

Or twist it into a rope and use it like you would a rubber band.
Amazing atemoyas!
I use buddy tape to wrap the scion, green "Walmart special" vinyl tape to really cinch down on grafts like veneer. If done right the union will take place within 6 weeks. I carefully cut off the green tape after I feel comfortable about the graft leaving the parafilm or buddy tape to fall off on its own. Here's one of the first veneer grafts I did - Reed on a Florida pit, about a 2-3" contact. Grows like a beast and produces well!

that's more wasteful and weaker. I use perforated buddy tape fold it half and wrap the union it fuses perfectly.

It's very strong, reason why I use it cause it doesn't stretch near as much as buddy tape. I buy it by the 300' roll for use in the vineyard, about $6.00 a roll. When a cordon comes loose I make one wrap with the Walmart tape. Holds for years. Know a lady that does 100's of grafts a year, uses rubber bands.

Good job on the grafts everyone.
Looks like I 3 out of 10 Cuban fiberless soursop pushing on cherimoya rootstock. Not sure if this is the real deal or if its reserved energy.

OK
One of your customers in Beaumont has seen all of your scions pushing including La Habra. Of course she is a master grafter must do 20 a month but it started with great wood. Ed still hasn't seen anything pushing in the Pierce, Selma, El Bumpo, Fino or Campas. Am holding my breath!

Question ( again it's my first time grafting annonas)...
so looks like 9/10 took...i used mainly soursop rootstock, and for a couple of them (jumbo AP and randhir on soursop), i left a few leaves and small branches on the soursop rootstock.
Can I keep those branches below the graft and let them grow out?

Any growth below the graft you pinch off. I'm amaze you had such a high success rate on soursop rootstock......

Cherimoyas are a month behind other anonas here so they are just starting to drop their leafs.....you should see buds anytime

Oh great - more confusion! What about the other llama relatives (Alpaca, Guanaco, and Vicuńa) they could be contenders. ;D

Frank - you are killing me again! You have the magic touch. I should have tried to put some of the Ilama grafts into a greenhouse right away. I borrowed some greenhouse space a few days ago, but it may not be soon enough to save them. They haven't turned black yet, but the buds pushed and then have been in frozen animation for the last couple of weeks.
I thought it was because I tried to veneer graft a couple.

Hello everyone
I would like to share and know your results from your anona grafts. I grafted a total of 77, between March and April, scions before I left on vacation. 72 took so I was delighted with the results. I left 30 or so of the small grafted trees in full shade, a handful in full sun and about 20 on establish inground trees, when I return I found all grafts in full sun fried the rest survived. Here are pix of some of the surviving grafts
I still have 20 or so in shade.

Great results fruitfool. I've had 7 anona species taken onto cherimoya this year it has been a great grafting season. I would advice against letting any of the grafts hold fruits a lot are in bloom
-
I have had a few successes, but to be honest as a first time grafter, I also had a lot of failures. Several scions pushed and then failed. It's clear that I need more practice making sure my technique is proper.

Hi Frank,
Those grafts look awesome, that is what you get in the hands of a master grafter. I know the material I received from you was excellent - all fresh scions, wrapped well, and lots of energy which is why they pushed growth. In my newbie hands many suffered untimely deaths, but it was a good learning process. I am hoping to continue to practice grafting and look forward to trying again in summer or next year. I'll check with you in summer to see if I have appropriate stock to attempt green wood grafting. Perhaps I will have better luck with that. Is the red/purple leaf Annona in your photographs a Genova Red Ilama?
-
JF do you sell grafted annonas? and do you ship to Hawaii? of do you just sell scions?

I do sell grafted anona trees but privately.....I may have some left over in fall ill post here. I gave up on shipping trees and fruits I really suck.....so the answer in no, I don't ship

Guayaba,
I see two buds on your Annona Rosada graft, which is more than some of my
sugar apple grafts, I am hopeful that your annona rosada graft would be a success!

The Annona Rosada and Genova Red grafts are still trying to push, so there is hope. Another graft of Annona Rosada pushed, then defoliated, and now is pushing again. I think they are toying with me. We have staring contests over coffee every morning and so far the Ilamas are winning! Thanks for having me look on the bright side! ;)

Very nice takes on those grafts! Definitely something I hope to do.
-
That is VERY impressive JF. I wonder what his secret was cause here in Texas two (master) grafters and gardeners have had nothing but failures with the exception of the El Bumpo Ed Self did and in that case both of the grafts took on one rootstock which I'll be planting in ground soon. Both grafters said the annona scions would push and then dry up.
Change gears, the avocado scions you sent me are going nuts making for a very nice cocktail tree. I'm letting all hold a few fruit because of their fine vigor and health. For example, these little Sir Prize fruit.

The scion 2017 sale is officially on the books. I have deleted all anona varieties and this thread is now open for discussion on the status of your current grafts.
I want to thank everyone for their tremendous and sometime overwhelming support
Till next July
Frank
Frank, great find. I started on the first post and am at 166 or so now.
Very interested and happy to see the success of folks who bought and grafted.
Wished I saw this earlier, I might have been motivated.
Looks like it is not too late though because according to your post, something happens in July.
What happens in July!!!!
Dont answer that, I read the rest of the posts and now I know everything ... including the meaning of life!!
It is all so clear now, so clear ....
But seriously, I will hang out here hoping to get in on the next scion sale.
Thanks to all who posted.
-
Hi Orkne
In the end of July, most likely early August, there will be a smaller anona scion sale.
Mark, I've had quite a few grafts dried after I went on vacation in April but that was due to neglect
I looks like you have good fruit setting on your Frankincado let us know the best of the bunch.

Frank likes to tease us with photos of his fantastic Annonas and feed our addiction. Way to go Frank! Great marketing ploy too! ;D Here is one of my successes from grafting last spring and just planted in the ground a week ago. The left branch is Pink Mammoth and the right is Birula. I am just happy they are alive and growing. Maybe in a couple of years I will have Pink Mammoth fruit.

I would like to report some unexpected success.
I tried some with the late sale with little or no expectation since I was grafting on to pond apple and for the first time. I was very surprised to see what appears to be a successful graft.
I do know there could be rejection later even as long as a year after the graft but I am still thrilled with this outcome and inspired to do this again when my cherimoya seedlings (started a few months ago) are old enough to be grafted.
-
Frank,
Looks like I have failed arka sahan, randhir, ilama, and anona rosada graft on cherimoya. :( but the birula, campus, calostro, LH sun, and Selma are all success graft. :).
I would like to pre-order the randhir, anona rosada, and arka sahan for next spring graft.
Thank you.

Its is over for the one successful graft, a victim of Irma.
What are the odds that a nearby shrub (of no value) will fall on just the one limb with the graft that took and avoid all the others.
Well, that's life.
I am in for the spring sale. Same bunch.
-
I thought Irma took out my just-planted baby Calostro and a seedling sugar apple, but I'm starting to see signs of life!

Count your blessings!
For those of you who know Ed Self, an ex-Florida guru for grafting and collecting rare materials since the 80's and me, a collector of fine avocados and mangos, etc. thanks to the generosity of some fine folks here, we lost everything to a devastating Texas freeze. Ed was gone and had a shed blow and tear into his greenhouse, low was 19F for him. 200 miles away I had a large greenhouse heater malfunction, low of 18F and lost it all but perhaps some citrus that was on the cold hardy Flying Dragon. In spite of this sickening and humbling setback, am not a quitter. Am trying to germinate cherimoya and avocado seeds for future grafting from materials sourced here.

Mark that’s horrible! You are a man of strength and not a quitter but it still hurts. Let me know how I can help
-
So sorry to hear about your situation, Mark!
Let me know if I can be of any help...!

Thanks for the kind offer Frank! Have started to germ avocado pits and cherimoya seeds. The loss has made me physically anxious, depressed and almost sick to my stomach. Worse than my 6th divorce! :D BTW, Ed lost "my" El Bumpo from last year's scion sale. His recording themometer showed a low of 13F!
Thank you too Samu. Many Texans took quite a hit with wide and varied losses both outdoors and in greenhouses even some down in the valley where freezes are rare. Many of the ingenious attempts (covers, tents, lights) to protect their faves got crushed.
We juiced Moro blood oranges yesterday. Not bad but would have been excellent with another month's hang time. Have many left on the tree which will go to neighbors and making orange marmalade tomorrow. Floor of the greenhouse and counters are littered with Oro Negro avocados, most still green. They will be my source of rootstock....I hope. ???

Wow, sorry to hear of your loss Mark and Ed too!! Bummer we all face these event's growing on the edge, hang in there and let me know if I can help you get started again with scion's :(
-
Mark, Thats tough to hear of your tree's getting wiped out. Spring is around the corner and hope springs eternal. Your life will be full of new life in no time, some of those big tree's may re sprout from ground level.
Thinking about Ed too and hoping you all come out of this better than before.
-
What scions do you have available right now?

First i want to congratulate you! Your moro orange juice looks wonderful! I'd love to know your orange marmalade recipe... Thank you very much! ;D

looking forward on getting more scions from you this spring. What's available right now or when will they be available?
-
Yucatán scions are all sold out. This year anona scions sale starts February 15 for the Florida guys only. Everyone else March 1st. Look at the selections on this thread there will be little change for 2018.
-
Thanks folks, it's all about sharing. I gave out a lot of cherimoya seeds for distribution at one of the Austin scion exchanges, hopefully the upcoming March meeting will be an opportunity for some of those to come back to me so I can participate in Frank's fine offerings. I wish there was a source for quality grafted stock shipped in 1 gal. pots! I don't really trust ebay sources.
Sorry to hijack this thread Frank but I think this is very important insight for folks growing avocados in areas plaqued by hard freezes. The only plant material that survived the 13F hit was a young Gainesville and a Stewart avocado grafted onto a cold hardy Opal rootstock.
-
Do you have any this year? Im interested in some to graft on my tree. Thank you
Tony

Here is the old thread of the semiannual anona sale so you can get an idea what varieties will be made available.
