How did your trees fair with the cold mrtexas? I have my citrus in containers so they were moved into the garage for the coldest days but I see a number of satsumas in our area that look like they came through OK.

I've seen the reports on this and the results look promising. It looks like they're using 40-50 mesh screen to grow under. Anyone tried this in the home garden? Any idea of a source or the price for the screen mesh (I see $0.5/ sq.ft. But not sure if that's a bulk price)?

I don't do too many grafts/buds, so I will often wrap first with parafilm and then use electrical tape over that to get a tight wrap (but I don't cover the bud with the tape).

Glad to hear that there's been some progress with varieties that resist HLB. The authors of this article, which I think include the developers of 'Sugar Belle', seem to think it is because of a higher content of certain volatile compounds.

Thanks mrtexas. I haven't tried oranges or grapefruit yet. I've had good success with Owari satsuma and Meyer lemon so far. I'll probably try to add some new satsuma and mandarin varieties as well as oranges. Might try a grapefruit as well.

I know California home growers can get budwood from the CCPP but I'm not sure if they ship here to the Houston area. Kind of expensive too for non-CA residents. I'm curious to hear what you find out because I'd like to get some budwood for grafting here as well.

Both arctic Glo and Indian Free nectarine have red in their flesh similar to that and you should be able to get them here in the US.

I've had FD in containers for 4+ years and haven't had flowering or fruit. I haven't pushed them really hard though so not sure what's possible. I can get seed grown Key Lime to fruit in 2-3.

Hi vlan1,

I don't have these but could make a guess. I have not had luck with peach/nectarine pollinating plum or plum hybrids. DWN describes SpiceZee as a nectarine interspecific and if you look at the published patent, the parentage is mostly nectarine/peach. Its physical characteristics seem to be very much nectarine as well (appearance of fruit, seed, flowers, etc., and is self-fertile). My guess is that it would not pollinate a plum or plum hybrid.

Since you have only enough room for the two trees, would it be possible for you to graft another variety onto a branch of the pluerry for pollination? Burgundy is recommended by DWN but other plums or plum hybrids will likely work as well.
