Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Any Info on Cotton Candy Mango?
« on: January 26, 2020, 01:29:48 PM »
Hello all, so just trying to get a Cotton Candy mango tree update. Anyone flowering yet? How was the fruit last year?

2
Looks like we made it through and the mango trees got just enough cool temps to help with blooms. We just need more of the cool weather and continue on pushing through. Fingers crossed. I have not checked my Sugar Apple tree yet. Will report on that tomorrow. Low of 43 in my area. Very nice.

The Brogdon is the slim tree that got ate by deer. I know it was deer because I catch them in the act with a camera. I’m wondering if I should prune the brogdon at the top to promote side branching. Any ideas?

Here is my Lula. I got it early last year and planted it same time. It flowered but dropped all of the fruit. I actually think it was nabbed because I really didn’t see fruit on the floor and they where getting large. So I can bet a raccoon or something swiped the fruit but they were not ready and very hard. Anyhow, it has not flowered for me this year though so I guess I am not getting fruit this year either since it’s a November-March fruit. Flowering should be around May? How is the shape of the tree?

Looks like a winner. Hopefully the fruit comes out clean and abundant and the tree remains manageable. Bring it on!

We grow Brooks Late. It is a heavy producer, the fruit are round, green. Have had them ripen as late as February and some say it’s holds to March for them.

How would you rate the taste of it compared to a Reed. Mark has me really thinking about adding one. I would pick one of these two. Zone9B.

Haven’t tasted Reed, but Reed is almost certainly better.

It even looks better. I may just get rid of a Valencia Pride that I have and put a Reed instead. I got plenty of mango trees and looking to extend my fruit season.

By all means take out a good Mango tree & plant a good CALIFORNIA Avocado variety that performs poorly in Florida.   Sounds like a plan.  How about we take a look at the what the old Pine Island viewer has to say on the subject shall we?

Well Brookslate was a second option as well. The VP is a pain in my ...Its the only one of my trees that has not fruited in 4 years.

My LULA is already flower type "A". Mark does yours have issues pollinating? I have tons of natural pollinators in the back from honey bees to flies and love bugs lady bugs etc....I am wondering if removing my Brodgon "B" Flower type will result in less avos....

My in grounds are rocking so far this year. No fruit at all but they are bushing out quite well. Sweet tart and Lemon zest are pushing a lot of new growth right now and the other two existing ones, cotton candy and graham are low and bushy as well, haven't walked over there lately to see if there is new growth. I put an ailing pickering that was potted(all my potteds were having issues this year and I don't know why) and found a spot in a clearing in the back 40 in between some oaks where I have some loquats in and it seems to be doing much better. Hoping for another winter like last year. But with us starting to enter another cooling period I am glad I diversified with cooler weather trees.

Good report. I got all my mangos currently both flushing and dormant. I got a jaboticaba rebounding from plant shock, I got a Lula avocado that didn't flower this year and that Brodgon that was partially eaten by deers all doing great. I have a Cherry Barbados that is getting massive and the darn birds keep getting to my cherries before I can. The thing with Cherry Barbados is that they go from flower stage to fruit ripe pretty fast and you got to watch them regularly or they will fall or get eaten up by birds. I got annona squamosa. I have a beautiful dwarf lemon tree that is fruiting as well. No ACP issues had it for 4 yers.

Funny you mention that! My Brodgon bottom half is a stick because of deers. They must love the leaves of it. It is also attempting to grow back at the bottom where deers pruned it. I was told Brodgon was a great variety for its flavor.

:) Amazing! I just planted a brodgon and it is tall with short lateral branching. Should I tip it at the top to promote more branching?

Mark can you update us on you Reed? Also anyone with a LULA that can chime in on if it's alternate bearing? Thank you.

TropicalG89 that's some good work there brother congrats! What grafting style did you use?. SimonG that is a possibility I may have to ease up on the nitrogen. If I had to take a guess it would be that I have been pruning the tree for the last 3 years consistently. I held back this and have let it run it's course allowing it to flush and flush. Im going to see if I can get a crop out of it this year (2020). But it is so darn aggressive. When is your last Nitrogen feed for the year done?

Hello, I ran into this list of avocado descriptions while looking for information on Brookslate Avocado. Hope you like. Is anyone here growing Brookslate? It appears to be a great tree for backyards in Zone 9B. Thanks!...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lula vs. Nishikawa Avocado
« on: November 11, 2019, 11:50:50 AM »
I have  LULA and its a beautiful tree. Nishikawa I don't have but it appears that the Nishi is a fast growing larger tree as supposed to a smaller variety tree like the LULA. Lula is definitely a heavy producer on my 1st year of planting it had about 10 fruits but I removed them because it was a young tree and I wanted to focus on getting the tree to establish and grow. Others who have had Lula say that the fruit is great with a large seed but plenty of avocados. I am looking forward to trying at least one or two of them next year and letting the Lula tree go in to full fruiting mode in 2021. Also not sure if this matters but I have planted several avocados and the Lula is the only one that has been care free with little maintenance or pest issues.  :)

OK Zone 9B, how have your trees been doing? I have been seeing some beautiful trees creeping over some fence lines around the area. Even a gigantic 30 footer full of life. I added a few more BBQ grills to spark up incase things get dicey. Anyone else added some new tropical for Zone 9B?

Thanks for the study report Rob. I noticed that it indicated that the dangerous acid level is lower when the fruit is sweeter and riper as supposed to the green sour ones.

Yikes! I may just go ahead and blend the star fruits and use them as a fertilizer for other fruit trees. I would eat may be one or two after dinner then. Not sure now I may just get rid of the tree now. Is this kidney claim actual? or just rumor?

That's exactly what I would use them for to. I have about 5 mango trees that are planted way I n the back of my property with really no access to water other than run off water and rain water. No irrigation. Is 20 gallons of slow drip water enough for one tree per week?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Opinions on Star Fruit Trees
« on: November 06, 2019, 05:08:02 PM »
Greetings all, I'm wondering what's the forums opinion on star fruit. I have tasted them before and I like the versatility of the fruit. Also the trees produce heavily and almost too much for any one person. What are you all doing with the fruits besides selling them and eating them? Speaking of eating star fruit some say that it is not healthy to eat to much, but we all know to much of anything is not good for you (unless it's mangos from Florida).  ;D

Does anyone know how effective these are on fruit trees? I know some trees do not like wet feet but I want to start dropping down some slow release ferts with some potassium to get my trees ready for winter and I thought that this would be a great idea.

Good to know Simon, thank you, Is the fruit coloring up nicely and clean? Is it still in a container or in ground?

So now that the season is completely over/ or just started depending how you look at it... What is the thoughts on this variety so far?? I see some weak branching on some trees and others are upright, I do like the large leaves it provides, any issues with mold or tree health? I may make room for 1 more tree and  :)
