Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dud Jackfruit??
« on: July 06, 2021, 05:42:14 PM »
Bought a jak at the market on Saturday.
It was solid green when I bought it and only very minimal if any fragrance.
No soft spots or any sign of injury.

Now it’s darkening unevenly and has what look like human stretch marks (first pic).
It is not putting off normal room-filling aroma and only smells fruity near the “stretch marks” up close.
Still not much give to the fruit at all

I know it doesn’t matter since the proof will be in the pudding, but…

Is this a dud?

Picked too soon?

Thanks

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Early Golden vs Prok American Persimmon
« on: November 30, 2020, 08:43:10 AM »
I'm thinking of adding an american persimmon tree.

About me and persimmons: I do not like Asian persimmons. I am perfectly happy with wild american persimmons. I like soft/mushy texture and mostly i love the spicy/date/pumpkin pie flavor. I'm not looking for something to cut up or to take multiple bites out of like an apple.

So that being said, I've heard great things about the flavor of Early Golden, though it is not one of the larger varieties.
Otherwise, most folks rave about Prok. I am a little concerned that it might be on the bland side.

Anyone have any thoughts/recommendations?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Proper selection of material for tissue analysis
« on: September 06, 2020, 04:32:17 PM »
I have a thread going over on the Temperate forum but this is a general question that applies to anything:

If you have leaves showing discoloration/chlorosis/some other likely nutrient deficiency (as opposed to fungal/bacterial or other disease), would you not want to sample these leaves - as opposed to "healthy" leaves on the same tree(s) -  in order to diagnose the issue?

I had a lab tell me specifically NOT to include the symptomatic leaves. I'm not sure if they were either misunderstanding my question or are just misinformed. Or perhaps it is I who am misinformed!  ;)

So, include the deficient leaves (only) or exclude them?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Pawpaw nutrient deficiency help, please!
« on: September 05, 2020, 12:57:55 PM »
I recently posted this on another fruit forum but I hope some of you guys can help me out.

Today i noticed a few of my pawpaw trees are showing some very clear issues.
This it the third year of my orchard but first time i'm seeing this.
Also, the symptoms only began appearing a few weeks ago.

These pictures are showing older leaves - younger leaves look totally fine.

I consulted the frequently used document for diagnosing pawpaw nutrient issues, and none of the pictures really look like this; however, the verbal description of potassium deficiency is pretty close (older leaves, yellow margins)

Also, the very well-respected Spectrum Analytic website says this about K deficiency:

"The classic and almost universal leaf deficiency symptom is marginal chlorosis of the older plant leaves."

Spectrum goes on to say:

"It might also show as a fruit crop that doesn't quite develop the proper quality or flavor."

While this is a really small sample size, my one pawpaw fruit this year tasted terrible.

Also I have seen mention of K deficiency causing persimmon fruit drop. My pawpaw dropped i believe prematurely, which also fits.

**Thoughts?**

Now then, to save time let's assume this is potassium deficiency.
**How should it be corrected?**

I had the orchard tested this spring with these main results:
pH 6.8
Phosphorous 519 pounds/acre
Potassium 194 (considered in "high"range)
Calcium 9806 (yes, 98060
Magnesium 393
(these are Mehlich-1 values)

I have known for a while that i need to get my pH down. It actually started 3 years ago at about 7.5 and thru elemental sulfur and compost, it's come down. I want to get it down even more, to 6 would be wonderful.

I'm not sure getting it to 6 will make this issue go away because...... I have 50x higher Calcium content than K. Spectrum Analytics mentions Calcium competes with K. That's an awful lot of Calcium. Mg is also high compared to K.

So I guess I don't know if adding K to the soil will really do anything. I could try foliar feeding i guess but don't relish that thought.

Part of me is freaking out thinking that I am doomed with so much Ca and high pH.

Help!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Funky jackfruit smell.....
« on: June 21, 2020, 09:04:04 PM »
 :o
I’ve bought many jackfruits I’ve the years. They of course can have a strong fruity, some would say “jungle,” aroma.

Today I bought one that smelled nice aNd mildly fruity In the store.
A few hours later, it now seems to have a gasoline-like undertone if I give it a sniff.

I’ve never smelled that in a jackfruit before. Should I be concerned?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How acidic is too acidic for irrigation?
« on: June 15, 2020, 12:03:42 PM »
My soil is slightly alkaline. Maybe just a hair above 7 or right at 7.  It's sitting on top of limestone, only about 18 inches down or so.
I do not seem to have free calcium. Unfortunately i don't know the buffer pH.

I have to do some irrigation anyway, so i figured why not use acidic water, treated with sulfuric acid.

My question is - how potent can I make the water without risking any damage to the trees?

5.0?
4.0?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Strange pawpaw leaf issue
« on: May 26, 2020, 08:05:49 PM »
Just one of my nearly 40 pawpaw trees I found has developed some odd blackening of leaves in the last week.
It’s only the newest leaves affected. There’s nothing unique about the growing conditions of this tree. It’s right in the middle of all the other trees - same soil, water, sun, etc.

The only theory I have is root damage - about a week ago (timing lines up) I was planting yet another pawpaw (it’s a sickness) about 6 feet away. In digging the hole I dug up about a foot long section of what looked like a pawpaw root, no more than 2mm in diameter. What you might see in the pot of a seedling tree.
It did not have a pungent smell like I’ve noticed when handling pawpaw roots in the past.

Any ideas?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Fungus killing mulberry?
« on: May 06, 2020, 07:20:25 PM »
I have a wild mulberry on my property.
Last year I removed a decent sized rock that it was growing out from under. This kind of exposed some roots , so I covered the spot with very old compost.

Several weeks later all the leaves suddenly drooped at once, and later fell off.
I noticed at that time a white fungal growth (?) at the base of the tree and roots. I thought this could be the culprit. I tried a half hearted drench treatment and the white disappeared.

Fast forward to this year, late winter.
It appeared to me the buds on the tree were swelling. It was premature, but I cut the tree back severely because at the time I wanted to create low branching to try to force it into a bush form.

Now here we are and the “stump” has no signs of life EXCEPT a bark scratch reveals bright green.
However, I just noticed the white stuff is back.

Any ideas what is going on??

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Very young pawpaw rootstock?
« on: April 24, 2020, 03:26:25 PM »
I have some seedlings that are only a few months old, but rather vigorous and healthy. Between 8-14 inches tall.

I am considering using them now as rootstock. They have a good degree of lignification already but of course not as much as a 1 year old+ seedling.

Any thoughts, or better yet experience, out there?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Two pawpaws in the same hole?
« on: March 04, 2020, 11:18:58 AM »
I have plotted 3 spots in my orchard for additional pawpaws, and i think this will be (sadly) all I can reasonably fit in. It will bring me to 33 trees.

But anyway - I'm considering planting 2 seedlings in the same hole in order to maximize number of unique trees.

Does anyone have experience with this or have any thoughts?

I'm not terribly concerned if, for example, the yield will be lower. Just kind of curious for folks' input.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Pawpaw flower buds gone
« on: February 03, 2020, 04:07:04 PM »
I was just looking at my pawpaw trees today and noticed that several flower buds are gone  :'(

I didn't have a lot of buds to begin with - this winter was my first with flower buds on the trees.

2 of my trees lost all the flower buds they had (between 2-5 buds per tree).

Thankfully the other trees have at least one remaining.

Any ideas why these buds are gone?

Obviously, physical forces can remove buds, but we've not had any snow, ice, hail etc. We have had some hard rains over the winter and some very gusty winds once or twice.
I rarely see birds perched on the trees but that doesn't mean it's not happening (just saying that i don't have flocks of birds out there all the time).

Is it common for the (young) tree itself to drop flower buds in the winter?  Seems like an odd time to drop something.

Of course, there's nothing i can really do about it but just thought it was strange, and sad, to see these buds gone. Especially on the trees that lost all of them, even if it was only a handful.....

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Blackberry (Rubus sp)
« on: November 30, 2019, 09:58:07 AM »
I decided to plant some Blackberry bushes. I've never grown these before and really don't know a lot about them.

I ordered the following from Ison's nursery:
Prime Arkansas Freedom
Kiowa
Darrow
Navaho

These are all supposed to be upright varieties - i didn't want to hassle with a trellis (hopefully i won't still need to).

I have a little concern because my soil at the moment is lightly above 7 pH....one thing i read said they will not tolerate alkaline soil. I will be adding elemental sulfur and some organic topdressing.

I'm also concerned about disease. Everything i plant in my garden seems to come down with some kind of fungus. I really don't understand it.

Anyway - if anyone has any tips or comments, please let me know! Or, just share your experiences with blackberries in this thread.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Adding sulfur via soil plugging
« on: November 05, 2019, 03:33:33 PM »
my soil pH is too high, I need to apply elemental sulfur granules.

Most sources say it is not very effective, or at least very slow-acting, if simply applied to the soil surface. It's recommended to work it into the soil to a depth of several inches.

I have established trees in this area, so i cannot till it into the soil, etc.

My thought was to use a 6 inch depth soil plugger (ProPlugger) at a safe distance around the trees to pull out plugs and fill with sulfur granules and either native soil, compost, or peat.

Good idea or stupidity?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Wild red mulberry question

I have a volunteer mulberry tree coming up.
Of course they are native to my area. My question is, does it need a cross pollinator?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / What varmint could this be?
« on: September 28, 2019, 09:47:41 AM »
Some kind of critter is messing around in my orchard.

It seems to be active at night though not exclusively, possibly.
It is digging shallow trenches along what I believe are old tree roots from trees I’ve cut down in years past.

My guesses are: (in order of likelihood)
Possum
Armadillo
Groundhog
Raccoon

Any ideas?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Issues with excess UV from light reflection?
« on: September 05, 2019, 10:16:49 AM »
I've had issues with leaves of Asimina triloba (pawpaw) developing sunburn in the late season (last few weeks), potentially precipitated by very minor leaf yellowing.

These are on grafted trees that have been in the ground since April 2018 and have been in full sun since then.

Typically grafted trees are not planted with shade protection, though I have decided at least one year of shade helps root establishment.

All of this is to say, these trees "should" not be having problems with sunburn on the leaves.

One thing i have wondered about is reflecting sunlight off my bleached-out wood-chip mulch. The chips are rather pale from sun bleaching and to just stand out there is almost like being on a Florida panhandle beach - the light reflection from the sand is intense and makes you squint.

Does this make sense?

If so, I had the crazy idea to seek a free/cheap and NATURAL way to DYE the woodchips darker. I was thinking a "tea" of black walnut (native tree) or some other plant that would produce a dark stain, essentially.
Any ideas for this? Black Walnut is probably the best option...anyone who's handled those knows they stain something awful.

Asimina is supposedly immune to juglone and grows under Black Walnuts in the wild, so i am not concerned there.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Lac Balsam" Artificial Bark
« on: July 26, 2019, 04:53:50 PM »
A nurseryman recommended a product called Lac Balsam for treating wounds on trees.
Specifically i have some cracking bark due to sun injury, and he highly recommended this stuff.

I searched the forum and found no hits.

Anyone ever heard of or used this stuff?

I didn't see it on Amazon - seems harder to come by.
