Purchased a couple of these yesterday waiting to soften up a bit. Big mangos. Look like a large nam doc mai or maha. Anybody know what variety these really are. And why can't they just use the damn variety name anyway?!!

Yes...Sheeeehaaan, I did a Google search and came up with hundreds of different recipes!

The first link says it could be a madame francis mango from Haiti. The second link has a pic. Did your mango look like that?

I have heard the "Tong Bi Con" and/or "Ivory" variety of mango called the Banana mango. As mentioned above the Haitian import mangos also use that as a marketing name for Mde Francis mangos as well.

Banana mango?? More marketing BS. Those look like "Madame Francis" Haitian mangoes. I'd be surpised if they were anything else.

That is exactly how I found it in google so quickly. I realized the name banana mango was likely a marketing ploy so I searched the USPTO for a trademark on the name "banana mango" and I found that FreshKing had an expired trademark on the name banana mango from 2001. So then I googled "banana mango fresh king" without the quotes and I found those links. Jay, you really need to step up your googling game.

I'm surrounded by Haitians down here, and have never heard of a Banana Mango, or anything similar named. the favorite mango of the Haitians is by far the Madam Frances, ( French Lady ) sometimes called Francine here is the Madam Frances with the so called black speckle banana spots.

another Haitian Mango variety is the "Babtiste" but does not look like your Banana Mango.

This next mango I am not sure if its a Haitian variety but looks similar to the M. Frances, but is larger, has less fiber and is more citrus like in flavor.

The Pascual. warning must be viewed on a 52" computer monitor.

So far this year the only mango I have eaten that I liked was the Pascual, if you crossed an Orange with a Mango it would taste a bit like that, plus very little fiber. They can get really big, but do not get those black specks, or get yellow like the Francine. they basically just get a lighter color green.

Actually was all a ploy knowing you would see this as a challenge to your own Googling skills and promptly go about putting said skills to the test. So thanks for the leg work!

But seriously...was going to wait until they ripen completely. For those who have tried this variety...what are your thoughts?

"Banana" is a term applied to a bunch of different mangoes. I don't think there is an established cultivar going by the name.

If it is Madame Francis, the flavor is decent, but is very fibrous.

Flavor ranges from decent to mediocre. the most fiborous mango Ive tasted. has a kinda of a turnip/parsnip flavor ( i realize that sounds extremly odd). i buy them every now and agin if nothing else is available. they are definitly better than TAs but way more fiborous

Banana Mango definitly projects a better image marketing wise then "Turnip -Parsnip Mango" would.

Maybe supermarket types do but not the ones actually grown here in SFla. While I still don't like tham and they are still loaded with dental floss, they don't have any turnip/parsnip flavor.

Not sure which, who or what MF you've been tasting, but this desription leads me to wonder if your turnips and parsnips taste more tropical than mine or if your MF's are just off in flavor. I cannot confrim the turnip/parsnip flavor on any MF that I have ever encountered.

Finally cut one open last night. Very juicy. Nice color. Got more fibrous the closer to the seed I got. Flavor was not bad. Certainly not the best mango I've gotten from the store and nothing close to what I've tasted at Harry's. Can't say it was worth $2.

We have Banana Mangoes here. So called as they are long, sometimes bright yellow and often very thin like bananas and are easily peeled, like a banana. Most are seedlings, which are quite true to parent. There is now an official selection of Banana Mango, sold through Daley's and Birdwood - I think the DPI had something to do with its breeding and selection. Its not as yellow or elongated as some of the seedling plants. Its low fibre and very good. Tree is usually small. Not your banana mango though.

The old seedling trees' fruit are very much like the Elephant Tusk. Flavour is a little different and the tree itself is smaller.

I bought a few of these at the local farmers market. Only $1 each. They were pretty good. Some fiber near the seed. Flavor was pretty much the best store bought mango that I have had. I would put them above good ataulfos, but below most of the types that I had at Harry's place.

The best store bought mango I've had was from California. They were quite ripe when all green. Large, fiberless, and delicious. Not sure what they were called...probably something stupid like "green mango". That was several years ago and have never seen them since. Shame.

Many of the altulfos lately have been sour and also have had a turpentine odor/flavor. We stopped buying them. The other mangos from Mexico are so fibrous, I have to saw thru them and the flavor runs from bland to horrible. It's hard to believe that companies actually plant these varieties let alone harvest and ship them.
