Avocado tree disease
« on: August 12, 2017, 10:39:37 AM »
My cousin has an avocado tree which used to produce about 15 fruits about ten years ago. But, since the last six years, the fruits are becoming less and also smaller. This year there where only six fruits and all of them dropped before maturing.I am attaching photos of the canopy, branches and a broken branch, showing dead wood inside. Please can some one suggest what could be the reason. Thanks.

The disease issues aside, 15 fruits and then getting less?  15 fruits per tree makes the tree a waste of space, I couldnt imagine keeping it with so little number of fruits.  Getting less wohld make me get the chainsaw out..  Is it a seedling?

Do you see any signs of borers on the main trunk?

No there are no signs of borers. For some one who is used to enjoying good avocadoes, even five avocadoes is a luxury he cannot afford to lose in a place where he cannot get any avocado. The fruits are so tasty, is why he wants to save the tree if possible.

I'd get a tissue sample off to a lab ASAP.

I'd also spray with a systemic copper sulfate fungicide/bactericide that is also good for blights, etc.  MagnaBon or Phyton.  Make sure to add a non-ionic surfactant.

Root system is OK?

Again, tissue sample off to a lab.  May be entirely cultural.  Avocados are finicky and require the right blend of RH, temps, salts, water.

Pics are definitely too small for a diagnosis  but in my one cent opinion glory (and troubles) of every avocado tree start in ROOTS.....
