Help! I need to save this mango tree
« on: August 12, 2017, 09:19:24 PM »
Hello, my mango seedling was suffering from anthracnose, and now large dry dead spots are forming on the old leaves, will it die? I've sprayed agri fos and copper fungicide weekly, and i removed the shade cloth a few days ago.

I dont see any evidence of anthracnose.  For such a small seedling, you are treating with a lot of chemicals.

For such a young tree,  its getting way too much.  Since I could not see the anthracnose in the pictures,  dont think I would even be soraying it with anything nor would I fertilize it at this age.

What soil are you using and how often are you watering,  and with what type of water.

I used sterile sandy loam, and i have not fertilized at all, only a thin layer of mulch to keep in the water. I also use regular city water, which essentially smells like a pool. Will it recover? Thanks, Matt

Is the sandy loam from the ground?  I assume your water has a high chlorine level , and doesnt it have high salt content also?

The sandy loam was the planting mix i used, and the chlorine levels are crazy high, and salt is off the roof. I can't grow avocados or lychees without a carbon filter or using RO water. Will the chemicals kill the mango tree? is it too late?

I would prefwr a more eounded potting mix.  Try using RO and flush the post to get the buildup of salts and minerals in case that is causing an issue and then stop the fungicides.   Do you have any shade cloth (like 35%) you could set up to put the seedling under?

I do indeed, its shaded from midday sun by the orange tree next to it. I could use the shade cloth to help it get started. Thanks so much for the advice! Ill just leave it to its own devices until winter comes. The new growth looks great though....

Rob gave great information. On a side note, I get dead spots and misshaped leaves on my young mango seedlings all the time. Har also gave great advice when he mentioned not to water the young seedlings again until the soil has had some time to dry out.

Here are some pictures of some of my mango seedlings. First picture is the younger leaves with dead spots, holes, discoloration, etc... second picture is the newer growth that looks a lot better.

No worries, don't baby your seedlings too much and they'll be fine. Over correcting for minor issues can cause more harm than good.
