Two Florida avocados I bought today
« on: August 17, 2017, 06:21:22 PM »
I bought at Broward Meat and Fish. $1 each/ Last week the Florida avocados were 50¢  each there. Maybe this is bs but I was told to shake the avocado and if the seed rattles around a bit then it is good. Both these passed the test/

In photos is a 12" steel ruler

Kinda crazy that these sell so cheaply. But I've picked thousands of pounds this week to dump on the market at $14/55 lbs, which is an improvement over the $8/55 lbs we were getting last week. If Russells and the others tasted better, Florida avocados would be cleaning house. Damn refined palates! ;-)

Ban all importation of Hass avocados into Florida. People will be screaming for those foot long Russells like one I bought. They are no good for guacamole? Ban Hass and people will find a way.

Hey JF. I cut open the large roundish one and it was only 20% less suitable than Hass for guacamole. Nice and creamy. But instead of guacamole I roughly mashed it up/ left lots of chunks/ with lots of fresh ground black pepper and some Kikkoman soy sauce...Delicious. Will cut open the Russell today. Last time I ate one it was like a zucchini. We shall see.

JF--
I just ate one third of the Russell avocado/ plain slices/ with a lamb burger. They went together very well. The tuna has been put aside for later or tomorrow/ Maybe I will sear like you say. I will stack up Russell against Hass any day of the week. Except Mondays and Tuesdays.

Taste is subjective and what you are use to.

I would love to do a taste comparison between a Florida Russell and a California Hass.

Results are simple...no comparison.

Agree, no comparison. Russell are not that good to me, really watery and for me they don't ripen evenly. I think is the shape that people are mesmerized by.
An interesting comparison would be store bought Hass with Homestead Grown Pinkerton.  Coming up October to November

With all due respect you have a grove full of avocados to choose the best of the day that that approximates Hass. But me not joking at all, that Russell I bought at Broward meat and fish was delicious along with a lamb burger. You say watery avocado but I say  (and no bs here) one must relax a bit and get into the subtle taste.

I picked the best at Broward meat and fish....  I shook the Russells that were there and the other ones and only bought two where the seed was rattling around.

Here in Venezuela we have the usual WI suspects - Pollack, Choquette, Catalina, Russell, and one more that starts with an N I can't remember but they say it's very similar to Pollack. I love them all, except Russell. Husband and I have tried several times over the years and never found an edible Russell - I can't for the life of me figure out why they are propagated. Long neck turns to mush before the bottom is ripe, full of brown strings and soft spots, and an insipid, slightly sour flavor - 0 redeeming qualities. After the last Russell disaster we decided never again!
I guess the fact that someone found a specimen he liked explains why they are propagated in Florida, but here it remains a mystery to me.

I love your reply. I always say flavor is subjective. Location impart their own peculiarity. If those Russell were good to you, then Russell is great!!!!!!
