plant immediately at a depth of 1 inch or less, in a moist acidic medium, with eventual drainage (it must drain, and not stay mucky)

keep in deep shade as a youth, gradually move into full sun (depending on species, sun tolerance varies)

keep water used for irrigation neutral to acidic, and also lightly fertilize with an organic fertilizer (like Holly Tone 4-3-4)

good luck! don't over fertilize, or let them become alkaline.

I've left seeds in a bag (ziploc method), and found them months later with 4 inch roots, still viable, and ready to plant.

Just gently pick apart roots.

my local fungus or mold never seems to hurt them, instead it facilitates germination, and acidic conditions (I assume in some cases)

Hi ASaffron,

What media you are using and the ziploc just left in the shade or sunny spot beside the window?

What I normally do is thorough clean seeds of pulp, sometimes I rinse them with hydrogen peroxide.  Place the seeds on or in between moist paper towels, then seal in zip lock bag.  I tend to let the roots grow to 1.5-2" length, that's when I finally plant them in a real soil mix.

A couple disadvantages I find using this method are (1) though there hasn't been many, I have broken sprouts/taproots through poor handling.  (2) because they sprout in a controlled environment, sun protection is an absolute must early on compared to a seed sown directly in soil from day one.

I sprout seeds indoors without the use of heat mat.  The zip lock bags sit next to a West facing window with blinds very slightly opened, enough to let in some light & heat but no direct sun.

Looks something like this ...

I throw mine in a drawer in my desk,

in coco peat, or just a regular napkin/paper towel.

I don't even clean off all of the pulp...ever.

if I really care about the seeds, and want them to live (tropical / acid loving) I add AgriPro Dry (essentially dehydrated Turfpro, which is humic acid and mycorrhiza, and other beneficial biology)

http://www.ecofriendlyonline.com/AgriPro_Natural_Dry.html

It (AgriPro) has a way of acting upon the flesh left on the seed, and the seed coat, acting as a catalyst in successful germination.

I've left seeds in a bag (ziploc method), and found them moths later with 4 inch roots, still viable, and ready to plant.

These seeds are so foolproof I honestly don't think you'd ever need to treat with anything...

I would follow Adam's methods/recommendations...he IS the Jabo master.  I think I saw him in that role in one of the Star Trek movies.

Why do people want to over use/abuse the use of GA?

I have several fruiting jaboticaba , I always put a big nursery bag with soil next to each tree ,I do that on any/all of my fruiting trees so when you eat a fruit you just trow the seed in the bag , no special treatment , just water , seeds lay on top of the soil most of the time.
I noticed that germination of the ' jaboticaba precos ' is almost 100 % , the regular jabs 1 out of 5 . Keep in mind that they get a total neglect ( I really don't need more trees )

This also reminds me of my M. aureana , now close to 2,5 meters very healty , planted in full sun.

Isn't this one supposed to fruit faster than any regular jab ? 4 - 5 years ? Well...not at my place . The precos right next to it and close to 1 meter has been fruiting several times so I guess it is not the soil , lack of water etc....

Yes!

they fruit when about 5-7 ft tall.  First fruiting should occur at about 4-7yrs (depending on nature and nurture).

I've experienced and also heard, they don't appreciate full sun (when young at least), high winds, and alkalinity.

just because you started complaining, your tree will start to fruit 2013. ;D

sounds like you may have gotten a seed that's literally a late bloomer.

how old is the tree??  if it's over 7yrs, I would be surprised!

sounds like a common 6yr tree old problem though...you are on the end of the long wait for flowers, and it's taking it's toll on your patience!

I understand totally.  These cherapu have me vexed.
