I have some that just sprouted (4 inches tall now)...have not tried grafting any anonas yet so i'm not sure of the size needed for the type of graft necessary.

Is it always best to graft atemoya onto cherimoya rootstock, or do you think annona squamosa would work just as well as rootstock?

Sugar apple works fine for most, it just tends to be dwarfing and not as long lived. Some varieties (Lisa specifically) don't fruit well on squamosa rootstock, but many do.
