Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Watermelon
« on: February 21, 2019, 05:08:10 PM »
This one was 43lbs.  Maybe let it go too long, the center was getting mushy and bad flavor.  Had to toss the core area.  Still getting the hang of this...  Melons can be hard to tell when to pick.

Brad, Have you figured out how to tell when to pick a watermelon yet. I'm have some oranglo started here in Fl, and was just wondering how you tell if they are ready to pick.
Thanks, joe.

You probably spoke to my wife Zena, although I really do like the flavor of the Day, I eat them with a spoon plain.. I had some really good Simmonds this past year, Catalina too! I would not pick a "best cultivar" of anything even if waterboarded unless I ate the fruit with the person and we came to agreement! I have grafted several Kahaluu Avos from Oscar (Fruit Lovers), most of which have been sold unfortunately.  I havent grown one to fruit though so I cant say they will be the same quality as they are reported to be in Hawaii.  Now that you have found this forum I think you will find a lot more sources available to you locally to feed this crazy habit! You will find a lot of really good people here! I would recommend joining the Broward Rare Fruit Council as a start!!

Patrick, I have a Kahaluu growing on Merritt island at the mango grove. I believe she is going to bloom this year. Very small rounded tree about 6' tall and 6'round. Very full tree. I'll take some pictures when she blooms.

I ordered a tree from Calf and it came in at just 2 foot. Someone had plugged or topped the tree at 2 foot. I need a 1/4 wide fat scion so I can graft the center branch again.
Anyone know who might have one to spare or sell?

Thanks for the help.

Joe

Very nice trees all. My I ask which Lychee is the most sweetest?

Thanks,

Joe.

May I ask you guys what you spray your trees with. They look very clean.

12
Thank you everyone for your replies. I think I'll let her grow until about 8 to 9 ft and see then.

Pinkerton is not a fast grower here in CA.  You can probably just shape it.  I wouldnt pug any avovado trees.  Maybe top it when its 8 or 10 feet tall and then shape the sides how you want.

Its fast here Brad sort of compact but you can you can prune each year and still get tons of fruits next year.

Here are two great varieties overlapping Sir Prize and Holiday this will put to rest Carlo's doubts

Very nice looking trees JF.  Bottom top is the pinkerton?

14
Does anyone know how tall I should allow my Pinkerton avocado tree to get before I top or pug it to stay small and bushy? My tree is about 4 1/2 foot tall now, with what looks like a lot of branch buds on the truck wanting to push out above the branches around the 2 1/2 height Mark.

Or should I leave it alone, and let it just keep growing upward?

Thanks, Joe.

Mine in ground for 8 months with two flushes but very small flushes, appears to be slow grower in CA.

Can someone please post pictures of new fresh growth leaves and matured leaves? wanted to compare if I got real one, lately Florida nurseries are sending us mislabeled stuff.

My Phoenix just sprouted new flushes recently, hope this helps!!! ;D😁 :D

Thanks for the pictures. Kind of looks like a keitt.

Has anyone had a Phoenix mango tree long enough to be able to describe the growth habit of the tree. And do you like the flavor of the fruit.

I did a search, and no info available .

Thanks,

Joe.

A friend from this forum recently notified me that there were some Asian mangos available at Lucky Seafood so I went there and picked some up. My friend said they could potentially be Kook Lom Krong but I know very little about Asian mangos so I have no idea what it is. 4 fruit were $6.99

Today, I stopped by Vinh Hung in Mira Mesa and they sold these same mangos in cases for $26/case.

I spoke to an Asian lady there and she said these mangos are sweet even when they are green and crunchy so I decided to purchase a case.

The 4 pack I bought from Lucky Seafood is blushing with a bit of yellow so I decided to cut one open so that I can sample these at different stages of ripeness. This one I cut open is just starting to turn soft so it is not in the crunchy phase anymore. The flesh gave little juice in this stage and it had a Brix of 19%! The flesh was sweet and tasted a bit like a sweet green apple and was very enjoyable. I think this mango will be excellent if prepared in the southeast Asian tradition with a bit of fish sauce or shrimp/crab paste and some chilly peppers and eaten chilled on a hot day.

The most exciting thing is that these were grown in Mexico so they were hot water treated and not irradiated. This variety is polyembryonic so it is a candidate for my seedling experiments.

Can anyone confirm the identity of this new commercial variety?

Simon

Those don't look  anything like of the Kook Lom Krong I have growing in the grove on Merritt Island.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I know that the logical course of action is to wait to try varieties this summer, but mango mania has fully taken hold. If I can find a Sweet Tart in the near future I will pick one up. I tend to like boldly flavored (actually most) mangos, and based on all the descriptions here, I'm pretty confident that I'll like ST. I also like the fact that it's late season and isn't a super vigorous tree. The only two varieties that I've ever actively disliked were Neelam & Lancetilla. My only regret is that although I'm pretty happy with my current selection of mango trees, I wish I had discovered this forum years ago. Rob, I will consider replacing the Alphonso. I remember when I was planting it and was so excited to have gotten "the best mango tree in the world"  :P

If you are on Merritt Island, Then give John a call at Tropical Islands Nursery. He has most of the new variety's, even Sweet Tart.

I planted this dragon Fruit in August 23, 2016 today March 23, 2017,  7 months have passed by. Does not have any intention of sending new growth out. It is as  fat as a pig.  Roots are shooting out from the bottom of the pot. The only thing that occurs to me is to cut an inch from the top to shake it up. Any body has any experience with similar situation?

Carlos,

Your Dragon looks very good. Your cactus is swollen and the top is going to push soon.
Some where on this forum is a mix for Cactus soil, find it and Mix up a batch and put your cactus into a bigger pot(it works great) and use a Liquid Cactus fertilizer once a month for it and lot's of sun.

Joe.

I tried to add the thread for the mix but it didn't work.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Time to spray sulfur
« on: March 21, 2017, 07:42:23 AM »
I've got what looks to be a really good fruit set on my pina colada. I'm sure there will be some abscission, but it's set a lot of little bbs. I think the key is to treat it for fungus.

I've been really pleased with THAT flowable sulfur, but there are many other products out there.

Jeff that's the one you want to use. But you should spray your trees at the end of December before Bud brake.
