Caerulea fruit is edible. I have not personally tasted but I don’t think they’re as good as P. incarnata which is another cold hardy species.
Frederick is a selected variety of P edulis, if I’m not mistaken. Frederick is a popular variety I think, but I don’t know much about tropical species.

If you are growing in zone 10 get the Frederick for sure it can be eaten out of hand

Caerulea has hardly any taste.

Mark, do you have any favorite PF types you can recommend?

I let one grow that came up on it’s own... not only was it bland and unappetizing, the seeds ended up everywhere. They are weeds that I was puuling out of the ground for a few years, and still every once and a while one pops up.

Bland, but easy to germinate.

In my experience P incarnata is also very easy to germinate if cold stratified for a couple months or more.

P. caerulea attracts the Gulf Fritillary butterfly which feeds on it.  Worth growing for the butterfly...not the fruit.

Try this link.  Fredricks is a flavicarpa/purple hybrid according to this document.

i had caerulea growing for a while
after it is established, there will be runners all over.
Incarnata runs also, but not as much for me as caerulea.

caerulea is  more cold tolerant than Incarnata,
both will die back in a freeze, but usually come back in spring...
they dont always though, and im not sure why.

Incarnata is much tastier, and it grows like a weed here.
and usually fruits fairly easily.
