Is anyone growing purple mobin in Southern California?
« on: July 19, 2015, 11:23:37 PM »
I purchased a Purple Mombin (spondias purpurea) a couple of months back as a stick in a container. It has put on a lot of growth since and wanted to know how hardy this tree is to cold. This way I can decide whether to leave it in the pot or plant it in the ground.

Thanks in advance
Raul

Raul,

I just rooted mine in a large tree pot and it is fruiting now. I don't think they do that great in the ground in Southern California.

Mark, I think you're right. It's probably better to leave it in the pot. I can always protect it from freeze if need to. Great to hear yours is flowering. I thought mombin flowers in the winter?

Xenia, I purchased mine from a place called Champa Nursery in El Monte CA. You can google their website. Don't know if they ship though.

Yes, they form the flowers in the winter without leaves and the fruit sets, then the leaves grow in the summer.

Good to know. Hopefully mine gets some fruit next year. Last month it had some late season flowers but all fell.

Hi Raul,

I wonder how your purple mombin is going after 4 years. Did you get any fruit yet?  I am going to buy a tree from Mimosa Nursery, but I would like to know how hard it is to maintain this tree. Thanks!

Hi Mark,

Is your mombin still in the pot? I have a June Plum growing nicely in the ground (been through winter), and flowering now. I wonder if Purple Mombin is as cold hardy. Thanks

Does this taste any good? From my research the taste isn’t too great.

I never try any, but I read that a lot of people describe it as 'addictive', so I figure it couldn't be that bad. If I don't like the fruit I can sell it online, they have it on etsy.com for a good price.

If you grow purple mombin (Spondias purpurea) from cuttings here in SoCal, keep in mind that roof rats are really fond of them as I discovered.   So far all the cuttings I've got from achetadomestica are alive and have rooted (awesome cuttings, really good!) but three of them were defoliated clean by roof rats at one point.  Put some rat-traps with white bread next to your plants, your plants will say thank you if you do :)

I have a red hog plum that is very tasty. I also have a purple or gold hog plum
and it is much less desirable. The fruit is larger on the purple tree but the skin is very
bitter. I split the skin and drink the juice and spit out the large seed and discard the skin.

The red has less flesh and is very unique and very good, my large tree has hundreds of
fruit so I can eat a handful at a time and really enjoy them. I plan to remove the purple one and
replace with another red when I get the time. I also have a small yellow one that I am waiting to
evaluate. I hope it is not another gold/purple one?

Do you know the scientific name for the tasty red one you have and where to buy the plant? Thanks!
