What is this Chinese fruit?
« on: November 29, 2013, 01:28:23 AM »

A friend took pix of this fruit near Beijing recently from a fresh fruit market and asked me what it is. I looks a lot like Duguetia but I guess it must be a Moraceae of some type. Does anyone know?

Hm, interesting, the leaves  look like some annonaceae also.

It resembles duguetia lanceolata fruit, except there is usually sharp tip on the top of each segment of duguetia fruits ( I saw it on all duguetia varieties fruits so far, except duguetia lepidota fruits).
I am not a botanist,  but your friend should check the seeds, it they look like annona seeds.

Rad yes I saw the resemblance to D.lanceolata as well but this is in temperate china and there is still fresh foliage attached. No seeds were collected and the price shot up to astronomical levels when a westerner tried to acquire a fruit.

Mike nice pics, maybe the price shot up because the chinese are supersticious. Then they think it brings good luck if a westerner buys their product. Last week i bought a boxershort on the market and the lady touched all her boxershorts with the banknote i gave her, that's for good luck  ;D

I was going to remark on its Pendanus look.  If ChingChang is right, and it looks like he is, then the eating quality looks to be about the dame as pedanus according to what I read on the internet.......albeit in Spanish, I think I am understanding this article.

I just got your Kadsura japonica seeds in the mail, thank you! Is there much difference between these 2 species? And how is the taste of both of them?

That link doesn't really say anything about the eating quality. Maybe something is implied when it says "no doubt it can be used for ornamental purposes. But we have left out other specific uses." Most interesting part of given info is that it is a climber (vine) , and needs acid or neutral pH, good drainage to grow.

Here is some info: http://server9.web-mania.com/users/pfafardea/database/plants.php?Kadsura+coccinea

it claims,  that it is hardy to zone 0?
So, if this is true I can grow it outdoor in Slovakia too ?!

"Kadsura coccinea fruit is a good source of nutrition and natural antioxidant. It is worthwhile to popularize this exotic fruit around the world."
From International Food Research Journal. This gives nutritional analysis of the fruit. Seems it is mostly used medicinally, or to makes juices, and wine:

My ex girlfriend told me that when she was in Guilin she ate what a fruit vendor called a "chinese pineapple", which made her sick for two days. I just sent her this picture and she said that this is that fruit!
