Tropical Fruit Discussion / Hard Pruning My Mexicola - Advice?

This is an open letter to any longtime avo grower out there.

Come Christmas - I'm looking to take a bit of height off the tallest, most vertical recent growth on my Mexicola Avocado for the first time. Up to now I've mostly been letting it run wild, except when I've found really cantilevered laterals or badly crossed branches - never any real hard pruning. Mostly, the tree has kept a pretty attractive harping 8' wide perimeter all on its own. At its tallest points it's probably pushing 12' and I'm hoping I can steadily work it to keep it at 10'.

Right now we're really only talking about three towering runs here, but is there a chance that in tackling all of them in one go I might really set the tree back unnecessarily? I kind of figured that a lost season might be a given, but I wasn't sure if, taken too far, this might result in alternate bearing for a longer period. I've gotten two increasingly productive years out of the tree thus far. This Thanksgiving should see its third.

Also, if I start with the idea of taking about 2' off of each limb, does anybody have recommendations about how I target my cuts - say, down to the nearest beefy 1/2" south facing lateral growth or...? Glancing at the tree just now, lopping at the 2' mark would have me cutting through a 1" thick portion of each limb.

Or am I overthinking this - and the tree won't miss a beat from what I have planned?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Side Veneer Multigrafts On A Loquat

What are the chances of success for side veneer grafts on a loquat trunk in a situation where I plan to multigraft the loquat and keep (ie not cut off) the named, grafted growth above? In my particular case, I would like to side veneer graft maybe two varieties 1-2 feet up the tree (and below the lowest existing branches) on my 5' Champagne Loquat tree. I'd like to keep the rest of the growth above as Champagne - for now.

I HAVE already done one cleft graft in the small canopy thus far, but am I wrong to think these lower side veneers on the trunk would be preferable to continually cleft grafting higher and higher on the few laterals currently available - which don't even begin until about 3 - 4 feet up the trunk? Also, if what I propose is doable, how low on the trunk above soil line should I begin? Thanks to any/all for input you can offer!

For those Southland TFF members - Last fall, when I was searching online for Cherimoya sellers in and around LA, I stumbled upon a link for Cal Poly Pomona's nursery sales program. I'd forgotten all about it until a friend from my hometown down that way happened to mention that he was checking out their Dragonfruit offerings recently. Their Cherimoya listings last year included many reliable favorites - Pierce, Fino, El Bumpo etc.

Their pricing seems very reasonable, and their site gives a schedule of upcoming availibility.
Anyway, I thought it might be a good off the beaten path option for people more accustomed to established, more expensive retailers like Mimosa, Champa, etc.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya Transplant

I recently made the tough choice to risk digging up a roughly 5g sized Chaffey Cherimoya - with just two pencil thickness harping limbs to its stature. I felt it was just starting to take too much shade from my neighboring Mexicola avocado to really give it its due.

I was careful to dig an excessively wide diameter around it, but the roots didn't manage to hold onto a whole lot of the sandy medium I had set it in maybe 18 months ago. The limbs are just starting a delayed push now - due to a chillier than usual April.

This is just sort of my open letter to Behl and all the other growers here who have devoted so much energy to the needs of these trees over the years. What are my chances of success if I pot this thing up for several months worth of convalescence? How generous - or restrained - should I be in my watering/feeding schedule during the early days of this move?

I'd be grateful for any advice - or cautionary tales.

I'm in the process of building a Franken - Feijoa. I'd be grateful to hear from anyone that might have 'Mammoth' or 'Wiki Tu' cuttings to spare.

I'm not sure if 'Wiki Tu' is a long shot or impossible, since I seem to see the 'TM'
proprietary designation beside the name whenever I see it in print on NZ based websites. Anybody out there know a US grower who has made it available in the past?
