The colors of Surinam cherry

My Surinams are super happy right now. Check out the different colors. Top right is a feathery yellow Regina seedling, top left is a reddish vermilion seedling. Bottom middle is marklee driveway in green with red new growth.

Very nice! My seedling was planted outside last fall and is just now waking up and got hit by a late frost.
It has some leaves pushing though so hopefully mine will look this gorgeous soon! I've never grown a eugenia and now I have several seedlings...

They do have some beautiful new growth and overall structure, some really great tasting (Crimson tide seedling )

One of mine is looking good! #1 and #3 are seedlings from a black-fruited tree from Huertasurbanas, 1 year old. #2 is some rootstock from FlyingFoxFruits, the grafted Zill Dark died last winter (Feb 2019).

I've only tasted fruit from 3 of mine, not including the Reginas. Hopefully that'll change this year as all 7 or 8 are flowering. My vermillion seedling is just ok tasting.

Shane, don't give up on your Vermillion it's one of my favorite's but my best one is Champa and I like westree 369 but are small and I do have a Zill-dark grafted to a Westree 369 but has not fruited yet! I have found that some years are better than other's plus older the tree get's they get better. I don't know about Regina's?

Many people told me that the taste will improve as the tree gets older. I tried some Vermillion from 20-ish years old tree, the taste was blowing my mind. Thick flesh, sweet with a tiny bit tart, and tropical fruit punch aroma burst in my mouth. So i bought the grafted tree from that nursery, last year i had the fruits for the first time and it was just okay. But it needs 5+ years for the fruit to taste really good, same with Barbados cherry.

Hope you guys are right about the age. Mine are seedlings though not grafted. I’d love to get some true vermillion scions. Also Is Miguel around to comment on the Regina mother tree leaf color? My two seedlings have very different colors.

A lot of people told me Surinam cherry seedling grows true to its parent. So if your seedling is from a good tree, you are fine. I got my vermillion grafted tree from a good nursery, it is only 3 ft tall now, but it is productive. You can have some branches free when i trim it later if you are interested.

Definitely interested in scions. I tried grafting zill black this year but don’t think they made it.

Vermillion seedling from Leo. Pleasant taste.


Champa from exotica. Pretty bad unless completely ripe and they usually drop before that. Nice when ripe.


Feathery Regina seedling. Haven’t tasted these bright red fruit yet. Also produces tiny seedless ones that are really nice. Size of a pencil eraser.



Regular looking Regina seedling. Only tiny seedless on this one and none ripening.



Marklee’driveway’ pleasant taste. Looks and tastes like the vermillion seedling.

Nice pic's Shane, have you tasted Marklee surinam cherry from Jim Neitizel also your Champa experience from Exotica is not the same as my Champa which can be eaten orange to dark red!

Yeah I’m a little bummed about champa but steve openly admits to selling seedlings as clones. I think I have quite a few of those.
