NGT,
Perhaps you can cut the tree to a stump and use Grant's Stump Remover (can buy at Home Depot).
You can drill deep holes in the stump and place the stump remover pellets in the drilled holes and activate with hot water.
However, it takes 4-6 weeks or longer for the stump and roots to disintegrate.

Cut down the tree and immediately apply glyphosate to the stump.   I do not mean the weed-killer sold in the spray bottle.  Apply concentrated (36%, 41% or 46%) glyphosate as it is sold in concentrated form in your area, or dilute 50% maximum for sprayability. Apply it to all of the inner bark area of the tree.  Applying within 15 minutes of cutting for maximum success.  An hour later - don't bother.

I cleared 15 acres this way.  If a stump sends out shoots, whack it with a large knife and apply more.  It will die.

That's what I was thinking but won't that kill the grass too?

What about copper nail?

Drill a 1 foot deep hole in the base of the tree, then add a solution of Diesel mixed with Remedy or Remedie posion. Works like a charm. Tree starts to wilt and die within a week or two.

Remedy.  It will kill the toughest quickly and completely - cactus, mesquite, locust, etc.  You can spray it on the live branches, leaves, or treat the stump.

It can be bought online.
Triclopyr also works well on freshly cut stumps and biodegrades in 3 months.

If you don't want to use poison, cut the stump as low as you can and build a small fire over the top and let it burn to hot coals.  This will burn out the stump and, in most cases, kill the roots.

I've killed a number of GIGANTIC ficus, Florida holly, malaleuca, hibiscus and other unwanted trees this way:

Cut to a stump at ground level, using a 1" (or larger) wood bit drill a hole in the center of the stump to the length of the bit (~6") pour in stump killer, repeat as it's absorbed. I also sever any finger type spreading roots near the surface with a shovel.

This has worked 100% of the time and has not affected anything nearby.

Well, the chlorine trifluoride would  just kill everything, so no one would notice one little destroyed tree among the carnage.

Otherwise try rememdy?

On Maui the invasive species folks use 2 parts round up to 1 part Garlon as a spray.  A very good method on stumps uses 4 parts Diesel to 1 part Garlon applied to fresh cut .
good luck

Remedy works fine, but when mixed with diesel it kills the root system faster. My grandpa used this mix to kill huge albizia trees, wild mangos, miconia, and the humongous gun powder trees here in the big island. Although I do have to say that remedy here is very expensive but it works great!

I heard you can drill a 1" hole in a tree trunk at a 45 degree angle, then fill hole with concentrated Roundup.  Refill hole with Roundup periodically.  I also heard you can pour battery acid (or other strong acid) around the base of a tree.
