Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is This PPK?
« on: June 25, 2021, 04:08:30 PM »

I bought this tree as a PPK three years ago and this is the first time I’ve let it hold fruit.  I’ve never had a chance to try PPK so I can’t compare it to anything but I was under the impression that it was smaller and earlier. It has some wavy leaves but they’re not all wavy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rosigold Blooming Again!
« on: June 12, 2021, 07:44:22 PM »
It looks like Rosigold wants to be both my earliest and latest variety since it is blooming again for the third time this year after holding a decent crop. I’m guessing it might be due to drought stress? Does anyone else have trees in bloom right now?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Potential For Root Rot?
« on: March 22, 2021, 08:20:51 PM »
Today I was ripping out some old shrubs in an area that I plan on planting a mango and some hibiscus. The roots of the shrubs (plumbago I think) looked really unhealthy and some of the older growth was rotting. The area is where the old decaying root system of an old tree is that was cut down to ground level over five years ago. Is this something that will effect the next plants I plan on putting in?

I have a spot in my yard where I’m thinking about planting a shade tree. Currently there are some smallish strangler figs growing there that I was thinking about leaving and letting get big but I’ve been reading that they may become problematic. I have been considering planting a mango in that area as a shade tree instead. Valencia Pride has a reputation for having uncontrollable growth and becoming a massive tree in a short period of time and would be ideal if it weren’t for the fact that the majority of the VP fruit I’ve had had been mediocre at best (I have had some decent ones but most have been disappointing). Are there any other mangoes that approach the vigor and disease resistance of VP but have somewhat better fruit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit Post
« on: March 17, 2021, 09:44:22 PM »
After doing some research online and seeing approximately 20 million ways to support dragon fruit, I was left with a couple questions. First, it seems like six feet is the most recommended height; is that just to make fruit easier to see and pick, can I go lower? Second, I recently heard someone recommended not having a support at the top of the post since it isn’t necessary and will make it top heavy (I’m planning on making them with concrete), can anyone confirm that?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Different Flavored Bananas?
« on: March 14, 2021, 01:34:01 PM »
After being mildly disappointed by my Blue Java bananas (yes, they are real), are there any bananas that taste significantly different than grocery store bananas? So far all the bananas I have tried either taste like a slightly different stage of ripeness of a grocery store banana or are slightly softer or firmer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dragon Fruit Fl Vs Ca
« on: March 08, 2021, 12:30:12 PM »
Most of the information online about Dragon Fruit seems to be coming out of California. Has anyone been able to tell if there are differences in how different varieties perform out west vs east? Are there differences in flavor, productivity, disease, vigor, etc?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Flower Visual Guide?
« on: January 30, 2021, 03:04:21 PM »
Does anyone have a link to a good visual guide for mango flowers? Ideally something with macro photos of male flowers, hermaphrodite flowers, fertilized flowers, normal dead flowers, anthracnose flowers, and powdery mildew flowers. I think I’ve been staring at my Rosigold flowers too long and I’m starting to convince myself something is wrong lol. Some of the flowers are turning brown and drying up and I’m not seeing fruitlets, PM, and I don’t think it looks like anthracnose. I’m guessing they were just not pollinated but my mind is wandering lol! I’ve been spraying with sulfur every week or two for PM since it’s been mostly dry but we have had some dewy mornings that make me think I should have chosen copper (I’m nervous about using the two too close together).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Too Early/Late To Plant Mangoes?
« on: October 26, 2020, 02:30:14 PM »
After months of waiting, my first success graft to a seedling started pushing growth.  Is it too late in the year to plant mangoes? Is it too early to plant this seedling? Should I wait until it flushes more?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Differences In Mangoes Year To Year
« on: August 20, 2020, 12:53:06 PM »
It sounds like 2020 was a weird year for mangoes across Florida; early blooms, multiple blooms, early fruit, and an early end to the season.  Has anyone noticed any other differences in mangoes this year? From what I bought at multiple places on Pine Island it seemed like coconutty mangoes like CC and Pickering  were extra coconutty. Citrusy mangoes were less citrusy, spicy mangoes were less spicy (except one weird Lemon Zest I had that was very spicy and fibrous) and everything seemed to have a little more fiber than usual. Has anyone noticed anything like this?

Hey All,

Assuming all other things equal (ie. disease, nutrition, flowering, pollination etc), does anyone know how much of an effect location has on the quality and quantity of mango productivity in Florida? Basically only looking at photo period and total thermal energy.  An example would be, if you grew three identical trees in Homestead, West Palm Beach, and Coco Beach, would you see a significant difference in production between the three trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pine Island Mangoes
« on: May 03, 2020, 10:58:53 AM »
Is anyone down on Pine Island seeing people selling mangoes yet? I usually make a few trips down every year later in the year and I’d love to try some early varieties this year but it’s a long drive and I’d hate to make the trip for nothing!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Taproot
« on: April 27, 2020, 01:22:46 AM »
I was watching a video on grafting mangoes and noticed the grafter cut the taproot off the seedling leaving only fibrous roots and when I planted a few new trees recently (3 gallons), they didn’t seem to have taproots.  Is it preferable to cut the taproot off a rootstock? I thought part of the reason for using a seedling over something like air layering was for a strong taproot?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bagging Fruit
« on: April 22, 2020, 11:36:11 AM »
Hi All,

What’s your favorite bag for bagging fruit on the tree?  Will any of the mesh bags protect papaya from papaya wasps or is paper the only way to go?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When To Graft Jackfruit In Florida

What time of year is best for grafting Jackfruit in Florida? Is there a graft type that seems to work better than others?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / One Jackfruit Seedling Or Two
« on: March 29, 2020, 08:37:53 PM »
Hey All,

Last year I planted a bunch of jackfruit seeds directly into the ground with the plan of grafting a known variety to the seedlings but not cutting the top off the seedlings and leave them as cocktail trees since the fruit they came from was pretty good.  I planted two seeds 6-8” apart at each place I wanted a tree figuring that something would happen to a couple of them and I’d have a better chance of at least one surviving. Well, all of them made it and all of them are looking pretty good so I was wondering if I should change plans and graft to one of seedlings and make it 100% the known variety and leave the other alone or should I stick to my original plan and cull one of each pair? Is there harm in having two sibling trees growing so close together?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Room For Three More Mangos
« on: March 24, 2020, 08:44:41 PM »
I have room in my yard for three more mango trees and I was hoping to get a few opinions.  Currently I have a Rosigold, PPK, Fruit Punch, and Venus.  My goal is to have a long spread out season and not a massive glut of mangoes in the middle of summer (although that’s not the worst problem to have) and have a good variety of flavors (I’m not a fan of spicy/Indian mangoes but like pretty much everything else). I plan on trying to keep the trees around 10’.  Currently the three mangoes I’m looking at are Maha Chanok, Cac, and Honey Kiss. I originally chose Venus because I read it was a late season mango but not I’m reading that’s not the case so now I’m looking at Honey Kiss. Cac tastes great and is suppose to be productive and disease resistant but I’ve heard it could be hard to keep it at a reasonable size. Maha tastes great and is suppose to be disease resistant and productive and honestly just looks really cool! Are there any I’m missing out on that would be better?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rosigold Flowering Now
« on: October 14, 2019, 02:24:00 PM »
Hey All,

I have a Rosigold Mango that started flowering last week, is this normal for this variety? It has been in the ground for about a year and a half, planted as a three gallon. I tipped it in late August.  I haven’t let it Fruit yet but was planning on letting it Fruit next year. Is it worth letting it hold Fruit now?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Favorite Wetting Agent
« on: May 24, 2019, 11:55:33 AM »
What is everyone’s favorite wetting agent, surfactant, sticker/spreader (I’m sure there is a difference between these but they seem to be used interchangeably by lay people) for foliar feeding? Right now I’m primarily using Keyplex, epsom salt, and Silica Blast. Is there anything that shouldn’t be used with a wetting agent?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee Wind Burn
« on: May 12, 2019, 11:36:07 AM »
My yard gets a lot of wind, particularly in the spring and it’s really taking a toll on my trees, particularly my small lychees that were planted as three gallons last spring. I tried putting up wind blocks made of landscaping fabric which didn’t work very well and I’m planning on spraying them with a silica spray, is there anything else I can do to help my trees? Will they stand up to the wind after they have a bit more size on them?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soil Testing
« on: March 22, 2019, 02:25:09 PM »
I’m thinking of sending some of my soil out for testing but the soil on my property has three distinct layers. The top layer is loamy sand which is 12-24” thick, then white/rusty sandy clay which is 6-20” thick, followed by black sticky sandy muck. Whenever I plant a tree, I dig down 3-4’ so my trees should be able to get to all three layers.  Should I send out three different samples or one sample with a mix of all three soils?  Are my trees roots more likely to stay in one layer than the others?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Recommendations
« on: February 25, 2019, 05:22:03 PM »
Hey All,

I’ve been lurking here for a quite a while and finally decided to register and post!
I currently have four mango trees: Rosigold, PPK, Fruit Punch, and Venus. All were bought as three gallons and planted last spring. I chose the varieties I did because I wanted to have hardy trees that would produce for as much of the year as possible (from what I understand, they ripen in the order listed). I have room for one more tree and currently my thought is to go with an Edward. Edward was the best mangoy mango I tried last year and would give me something in between Rosigold and PPK. Although from what I’ve been reading on here, it sounds like I would be foolish to not just plant Sweet Tart (which I haven’t had a chance to try yet) instead.  I’ve considered grafting Sweet Tart on to Fruit Punch so I can have both but Edward has a reputation as being being shy bearing and Sweet Tart has a reputation as being the best mango ever so I’m thinking I might just want to have it on its own.  I guess my questions would be 1) do I have to fruiting times correct and 2) which option for planting/grafting would you recommend?
Thanks!
