canarium sp ? from Vanuatu
« on: February 27, 2017, 03:35:24 PM »
Here are some pictures of a canarium specie from Vanuatu I have recently discovered at a friend's place. It might be named already but could not find any info about it. It is different from the famous Canarium indicum ( ngali nut ) from which one make Nangai oil . Canarium indicum is very popular in Vanuatu but that one is pretty rare which is surprising as I think the nut is more valuable and tasty compared to ngali nut.

Actually the seed is a lot bigger compared to Canarium indium and pretty tasty. You can eat while not yet fully ripe. The tree is not so big/tall, and makes a really nice ornamental. Flowers are amazing too.

Anyway if anyone has more info or know the right id of that specie, that would be great to know.

Could be C harveyi or C salomonense or a lucky find (native cross between either of the three edible species)

Hard to tell (the pictures are small) but almost looks more like a cut nut to me (Barringtonia sp).  I think there are three species or so in Vanuatu and there is some pretty significant genetic variation.  The infructescence looks too short for most pics you see of cut nut -- do you know if that is the typical length of the infructescence?  I think I had posted before about nuts from Oceania -- I'll try to find the links & post again in the library section.

The leaves are definitely Barringtonia and not Canarium.
