I am finally closing in on completing my yard, and I'm looking for boysenberry and thornless blackberry cuttings. I'd be interested in other berry types if anyone has suggestions and/or cuttings I could purchase.  Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi all, I'm looking for scions for the two varieties listed above, the Jan Boyce and Reed. I'll be grafting onto my Gwen and since I have limited space left, I'd like a multi variety tree,  ideally a tree that will provide avocados most of the year. Recommendations are appreciated!  I live in Southern California zone 10b. My other tree is a baby Gem.

Could that be jocote? I saw that everywhere in the Guanacaste region.

I am hoping that there will be able to be scion exchanges this coming year. I missed this last one in central California due to being in the hospital, and by the time I was well enough to go to the ones more south, the Covid 19 situation was in effect.

I agree with Brad-- I am also in southern California, but north of Los Angeles, and have a Big Jim loquat I bought from Home Depot that was about three feet high not long ago, maybe early June.  It is now well over five feet tall and is blooming!

Cuttings are all gone also?

Thank you! That's helpful.

Do you still have more? I'm interested, if so. Thanks!

I purchased Buddy Tape elsewhere after you ran out. Does the Buddy tape you purchase have perforations every few inches? The brand I bought did, and I am not particularly fond of that. I'd much prefer it to be one long continuous roll.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Try a Water Scarecrow
« on: July 15, 2020, 06:02:23 PM »
Fortunately my fruit trees back a barranca, so no one can get to my ripe fruit. I've seen one or two people in the barranca on rare occasion, but they can't reach the fence-line. Anyway, one way I've discouraged thieves of many types (animal, human) is with a water scarecrow. It doesn't hurt anyone, but scares the heck out of them. I have it on pretty high so the pressure is good enough to soak them in milliseconds. I discovered them after I got tired of someone's big dogs using my front yard for their private bathroom. I also have cameras now. I just bought the signs saying protected by Ring, so hopefully that will add to the protection level.

Honestly, in most communities I've been in, people are happy to share if asked.  We have a great group of people in my area trading for various fruits and veggies, and it's a load of fun. Many of us are on local Facebook and NextDoor forums and offer our excess produce to others for free. It's the stealing and self-entitlement that drives me crazy. It would never occur to me to just take fruits or veggies that I hadn't grown.

Is there somewhere that you can point me to that describes the different varieties? Do you have any favorites? I'm planning to buy a mango tree tomorrow to graft onto.

Razor blades are used commonly in Asia too.  I use disposable scalpels which is basically the same as a razor but with a handle.
Peter
Do you use the rounded or pointed tip scalpels?

I'm also in Southern California, Zone 10b, so thanks for the post since you asked all the questions I needed answers to!

I've been reading up on grafting knives also, and it seems that some think that a single bevel knife is better for grafting than a dual bevel, but I can't find an explanation for that belief. Any thoughts?

I'd love a multi-graft. Can you tell me the process? And realistically, how small do you think a tree can be and still be productive? I have room for something large, but prefer something that can be maintained at a height at which I can harvest. There are loquat trees around me everywhere and they are crazy tall. So much fruit gets wasted!

Highly difficult. Best of luck.
Shipping to AZ or Nevada is a good idea to try and work out, still gotta find that person willing to ship tha Zill’s though.
Oh, sorry! I thought it was the tree you wanted, not the actual fruit. My bad.

https://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/garden_catalog/cat.cgi?uid=mangifera_indica  It's pricey, but it's certified for California.

I'm in California, and have a couple of spots that would be perfect for this plant. Our back yard theme is tropical, and I'm intrigued with the idea of the ice cream bananas.  PM me if you have some available.  Thanks in advance everyone.

Thanks! I do have my eye on that one as well, but don't think I will be able to travel for that one either.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Looking for Gem and Phoenix Avocados
« on: February 08, 2020, 12:50:41 AM »
I was reading up on new avocado varieties and came across Phoenix and Gem avocados, but cannot locate a source for either online. I'm also considering Sharwill and Gwen. I can't travel right now for physical reasons, so would need these sourced online. If anyone has other varieties they highly recommend and their sources, I would appreciate it! Right now I have a Reed and Lamb. I'd be open to grafting, too. Due to being in the hospital, I missed the scion exchange in Southern California in January, and unfortunately have to miss the one this weekend as well.

You're absolutely right -- embarrassing since I live in a town that has Hass avocado ranches!  :-[

Thanks for the recommendations regarding varieties. I'd be especially interested in trying bud grafting, which is probably a better option at this time of year if I can get some sources, but again, I need to know who/where to buy from.
