Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anthracnose treatment large tree
« on: September 05, 2017, 12:59:51 PM »
Are there any "fruiting bodies" (tiny mushrooms) on those dark spots on the cherimoya leaves?  If not, it may be sunburn, burn from use of Neem oil or other oil in hot weather.

there are no "fruiting bodies" around.  it's so random.  I am seeing this on couple of leaves here and there on my avocado, atemoya, guava, longan as well.

Hi experts, could you help me to identify whether this is anthracnose?  I am seeing this on nearly all of my fruit trees.  I am hesitate to use copper cuz it burns.  I am picking off these leaves as I see the symptom.  What is the recommended treatment?  Thanks

I think some people in Florida don't realize how dry and different California weather is compared to Vietnam, Malaysia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Florida.

Yup. Especially Southern California. Many areas are, climatologically-speaking, a desert. In many years we get less than 10" of rain.

I can't think of any food crops in S. California that are not irrigated.

Prickly pear cactus does ok

You should grow a Peruvian Apple.  Very sweet fruit with crunchy seed like sugar crystals.  Absolutely delicious.

Why don't you guys use a balanced fertilizer with micros?  Try gro power 8-6-8 fruit tree fertilizer.  10-50-10 is for growing flowers.

I almost forgot I have a bag of that.  Lol.  Which is better osmocote 14-14-14 or 8-6-8 for increasing fruit size and potentially fruit quality such as taste?  Or perhaps something else one may suggest?

Pickup a case of Mexican Keitt.  The largest mango I have ever seen.

The 10-52-10 fertilizer is high in phosphorous and my understanding is used for induce flowers.  I remember someone mentioned it also can increase fruit size and that's why I used it.  I had no drops before I used it and no drops since I stopped.  I had been using seaweed extract foliage spray weekly since the beginning of spring.  My tree is looking healthier than ever.  I am still looking for fertilizer to increase fruit size but afraid the wrong one could cause more drops :(.  I have read Growmore 0-50-30 is a good one but worry about the amount of phosphorous.

I have also experienced fruit drops after using super bloom 12-55-6.  The fruits were size of walnut.
No more drops since I stopped using super bloom.  I need to find another fertilizer which will increase fruit size but wont cause drops.

I also foliage feed with seaweed extract.  but I think that's only nitrogen.

Hello, anyone here can tell me which tastes better? African Pride or Geffner? Man, I bought 3 Geffner and 3 African Pride from a nursery, and put all of it on the ground. Now that all these trees have fruits, and all 6 trees turn out to be AP 😭. Don't know what to do now..

I have the same problem.  My Geffner is bearing fruits and they look exactly like my AP.  really upset with the nursery who sold it to me  >:(.  My Geffner is still in container.  Perhaps I can try to sell it.

Guys, how come everyone dragon fruits look big and mine looks super small? What in the world is this variety? It's just one inch big??? I have 6 fruits and they are all riped, but super duper small cheese..

good things come in small packages  ;)

Sugar Dragon produce one of the best tasting fruits and the average size is like a duck egg.  Neon, VooDoo Child, Frankie's Red, Columbia yellow all produce smaller but very tasty fruits as well.

I am growing a Mycriaria Grimal in 15gal container.  It has a tag from Pine Island Nursery.  The fruit I tasted from another more mature tree was delicious.  Hopefully my will produce fruits soon.

I"m no expert, but I don't think this is a grimal. The leaf shape and color seem a little off. I have several grimal trees and I have never seen and pink/red in the new growth. It looks a lot more like a sabara to me. In any case I hope you get fruit soon!

Maybe my mistake.  This is my first jabo.  If someone can kindly help me identify it that would appreciated.

Hi Har. Do you mind sharing a few tips for picking atemoya at the perfect stage for home consumption? Is there a huge difference between cultivar ripeness traits?

I dont mean to steal Har's thunder.  my experience is the fruit starts turning yellowish, and the pointing lobe are starting flatten out.

It's in shade now surrounded by other trees.  I did a deep flush about 2 weeks ago and being watering 2x daily with my irrigation mini sprayer.

Soda can size trunk?  That's bad news for me.  Mine is grafted and barely grew in a year.

I am having the same issue.  Two flushes this year and 95% of the leaves dropped.  What's remain are sick looking leaves.

congrats.  I know 3 friends successfully growing jackfruits in So Cal.  El Monte, Cerritos, and Rosemead.  I was convinced and bought a tree last summer.  base on our conversations it maybe a little late for your young fruits to reach maturity.   if the weather stays warm you might get lucky.  W LA tends to be cooler then inland.

Totally depends on the size of the pot. a 15 gallon container should accommodate a plant for its entire life. Smaller pots might restrict growth and end up being root bound. Given the option, I would grow all my plants in pots from now on, as it makes water and nutrient management so much easier to control, plus it protects from most garden pests that bother roots. But, if you are concerned about appearance, you can plant in the soil. Or you can do both, by digging a hole large enough to sink a plastic or ceramic pot into the ground, up to its rim, and then planting that way. Try and add a foot or so of gravel under the pot for drainage and offset your post/trellis so it doesn't penetrate your pot and you can sport healthy plants and hidden containers.

I'm not sure if mine are 15 gallon containers. They're about 11 inches in diameter both top and bottom and about 11 inches tall. So it's 11x11x11 .. would that suffice? Aesthetics is not my main concern so I don't mind having the pots out of the ground. I just hate having the idea of having to repot these after several years. My neighbor has hers growing in the same size container but she has at least 3-4 cuttings in that one pot where as I only have 1 cutting. She said it was ok to grow in pot. Wish I had asked around.

11x11 is a 5gal pot.  I am growing several in 5, 7, 10, and 15gal pots.  I started with 5gal last year and some of them bloomed and fruit this year.  they are all above ground level and most of their roots havent penetrated the bottom of the pots.  I custom built trellis which sit inside the pots.  the advantage is I can easily move them around if necessary to avoid direct sun uv and/or against a south facing wall for frost protection.  this is the first year of my experimentation of 5gal plants so I dont have a whole of of data other then it work.

Aww.. I had a feeling it wasn't big enough. I've had them in the 5 gal pots for two years and the roots haven't penetrated the bottom either. I'm going to experiment too and see how long they last in 5 gal pots since I'm going to have more cuttings than I need in the next two years. For now the ones that I've planted in 5 gal pots that are above garden soil, I've already cut the bottoms out. I'm going to use the extra space I have against the wall of my house without the bottoms cut out and see how long they can go.
What is the name of the variety you have in the last picture? The flower is a gorgeous color!

Two years should be mature enough to bloom and fruit.  Don't over water otherwise your plant keep push new growths instead of flowers.  Cut the tips from those hanging stems like the first picture.  Try using some blooming fertilizer like Scotts Super Bloom.  Your plant is still young I would use twice a month BUT don't over do it.  You should stop using it by the end of Sept.  it takes 30 days to flower and another 30+ to ripen fruit.  you don't want to over stress your plant going into winter.
The last plant is Bruni.  It's a close sister of Connie Mayer.  The flower was beautiful.
