Cold Hardy Citrus / Deciduous citrus developed in Florida
« on: February 08, 2022, 03:20:23 AM »
Selection 1: ‘Sherman’. Early Ripening (October) and cold hardy. The tree is actually deciduous. Fruit is seedy. Flavor is mild, but with solid brix in the 12 range. Ratios range from 14.5-14.8. Not graft compatible with US 942. Its primary drawbacks are thorniness and canker susceptibility. Released and cleaned. Displayed in October.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Hybrids
« on: November 23, 2021, 11:20:10 AM »
This is the first year this F2 Pomelo x Poncirus has fruited.  It is grafted 5 ft up on a Poncirus which has not been pruned back.  It has gone through several winters without protection, including a low of about 6 F, -14.4 C.  Fruit does not appear to be ripe.  Brix is 8.5.  Taste is sour with Poncirus overtones.  Somewhat like a grapefruit picked too early.  Fruit is oval 5.5 inches (14 cm) at the widest and 4 (10 cm) inches high.

Cold Hardy Citrus / 28 F, -2.2 C
« on: November 17, 2021, 02:25:16 PM »
It is going to freeze next week.  Do citrus fruit survive without damage at 28 F, -2.2 C temperature?

June flowers on a couple Poncirus hybrids set fruit and I want them to have as much time on the plant as possible for the seeds to develop.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Bruce Grapefruit (Pink Frost)
« on: February 02, 2021, 02:51:30 PM »
Dr. Hanna introduced this variety.  Is anymore information known about the background of this plant?  It fruited for me the first time last year.  The fruit is good tasting.  It was protected in the ground so I do not know the hardiness.  Is Pink Frost irradiated, or just renamed?  How hardy is it?

"Bruce™ grapefruit is similar to grapefruit sold in grocery stores but can be grown in southern Georgia, outside of the traditional citrus growing areas. Data and observations indicate that Bruce™ is cold-hardy as far north as Tifton, Ga."

'The Bruce Grapefruit is a greater than 30 year old red grapefruit tree located in south Georgia that is being propagated because of its hardiness. "

Cold Hardy Citrus / Pinkish Purple flower buds
« on: April 07, 2020, 08:32:44 PM »
After several years, a cross between Miho and Poncirus is about to bloom.  The pinkish purple color is slightly more intense than shown, and the smallest buds have more color.  I have only seen this color on lemons and limes before.

Cold Hardy Citrus / Unknown Citrandarin
« on: May 06, 2019, 05:40:12 PM »
A prolific bloomer with double mostly male flowers, this was sold as US 852, but the fruit are not the same as the US 852 fruit given to me by Stan Mckenzie.  The fruit are more red than 852 and don't taste quite as good.  Seedlings seem to be identical to parent plant.

When trying to speed up blooming on a seedling, does the rootstock make a difference?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Tetraploid Poncirus drought and cold resistance
« on: December 23, 2018, 05:04:37 PM »
"accumulating evidence demonstrate that autotetraploids exhibit
dramatically enhanced tolerance to a variety of abiotic stresses, including cold, drought, salt, heat, chromium toxicity, and boron excess"

Higher amounts of sugar in tetraploid plants may add cold tolerance?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Carport Cover
« on: December 13, 2018, 12:39:30 PM »
After a few years of success and some major dieback failure with different kinds of protection for this Owari, relatives settled on this solution last year.  A portable carport from Harbor Freight.  It has four sides, one of which is designed to be opened with zippers.  It covers 10' x 17' and is 9' high.  It goes on sale regularly.  It is big enough to handle two trees.  Fruiting this last season was the best yet, with well over 200 fruit.

Some light, but not much gets through.  On the defunct Citrus Forum there is a posting of a citrus tree kept several weeks in total darkness without harm.  This carport demonstrates that fact also. It was covered for over two months. It showed no leaf drop or other damage when uncovered last spring.  One side is folded up on most days to keep the temperature down, but closed on cold nights.  The low last year was 10 F, -12 C.  It was kept above those temperatures but not necessarily above freezing with lights.  The frame was left in place all year.
