How do I tell when my jabos are ripe????
« on: April 16, 2019, 06:21:54 PM »
So, my jaboticaba tree has some beautiful, glossy, very dark fruits.  But they still feel firm when I squeeze them gently. Not rock-hard, just firm.
When do I pick them?????
When they are soft?
When they fall?
Now, before they are too soft?

This is my first crop, so I just don't know!!!

Thanks!!!

Carolyn - Owner of the VERY FIRST Boise Idaho jaboticaba fruits!!!!

for the regular jabo, it's by color. Should be as black as possible. Not sure about the red one.

Congrats on the first jabos!

Once they start to change from green to red/purple/black (depending on variety), they usually can be eaten. Find the darkest one and give it a try. The flesh on the inside is best, and the skin is a little sour with a funny taste. I eat them whole until tired of the skin, then switch to the insides.

They keep well in the fridge.

Hopefully you will get allot of practice picking them!
I like the reds better a little under ripe when they are red colored.
I am also paranoid the birds will figure them out if I wait.

They will have a little give to them when you squeeze between your fingertips

So squeeze each softly then taste and you’ll figure out which ones taste best and how it feels
