Very thorny Meyer lemon

So after having another baby and falling off the radar and loosing another citrus (which always happens when I have a baby) I went to my local nursery to buy a meyer lemon and the thorns were sooooo huge on them. I don’t remember my last meyer having giant thorns. Is that normal?

Desertcitrus, I don't know about Meyer Lemon as I don't grow them, but I wanted to say welcome back - nice to hear from you again.

Short answer:  it's mildly unusual but not impossible for meyer lemons to have significant thorns.

Improved meyer lemon trees have thorns.

Thanks millet! And thank you everyone for your responses. My last Meyer had thorns but small ones. This one had 2 inch long massive ones and it seemed kind of weird.

My improved Meyer tree was over 15yrs old, and when the new branches grew out from the main branch it does get some large thorns. I just cut the thorns so I don't get stabbed when I pick the fruit or graft other varieties on the tree. Lemon fruits are much larger on the Improved Meyer when compared to the Meyer lemon.
