Dragon Fruit Cutting - Which end is which?
« on: May 01, 2020, 04:46:48 PM »
Hi Everyone!
I recently was gifted a dragon fruit cutting.  I have never rooted a dragon fruit before.  Which end do you root?

The spines point up. So the tapered end near the writing.

Actually ignore me, it doesn't look as obvious in the picture.

What are the things to look for?
At first I thought maybe the thorns point up but I have seen photos where some point up or down.
This one mostly points straight out.

Whenever I cut a piece, its from the joint.  Then sometimes will lop off the growing tip aince its not hardened.  Thats looks like what they did.  No one would make the bottom cut in the middle and leave you with a pointed tip.

Ok Thanks guys!
I'm glad I asked.  I'm sure I would have inserted the larger end into the soil.

I think that is probably correct. But the cutting could simply be laid sideways and it will surely bud out.

How many buds would come out when you laid cutting on its side?

That really depends, I don’t know. But it would give you the best chance to immediately get the most starts from a single cutting.
