If everyone could humour me on this it may be a bit long winded. Back in 2014 Jackfruitwhisperer listed seeds of this tree in this post.
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=12112.msg155504#msg155504I wasnt lucky enough to get seeds of it and thought no more about it. Then grapebush mentioned he had germinated seeds of a tree he was told was Pouteria sebertii but wasnt sure in this post.
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=18610.msg232268#msg232268I posted some pics and expressed interest in some seeds. Then noted both members were in madeira and assumed that it was the same species as Jackfruitwhisperers.
But grapebush thought it may be a hybrid of lucuma snd green sapote as the fruit seemed wrong for sebertii. I asked Jackfruitwhisperer and he pointed out the underside coloration of the plants was wrong for both parents.
It wasnt until I was looking for a colombian sapote named pouteria arguacoensium and came across this pic I started to wonder:
It had the same leaves as the members plants and the fruit was close to described as well. Its also a tree rather than a small shrub. Then I read this:
https://books.google.com.au/books?id=10IMFSavIMsC&pg=PA1657&lpg=PA1657&dq=pouteria+arguacoensium+cultivation&source=bl&ots=7GiQu2JW8T&sig=c81l1CdIZcHXDHU0AD0trH6BRkQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjGrN3UgcDPAhXIHpQKHb8JB48Q6AEIHjAC#v=onepage&q=pouteria%20arguacoensium%20cultivation&f=falseApparently it was introduced to these islands for its delicious fruits and cultivated for a while. Now I was really interested so I looked for pouteria sebertii, syn becarellia/chrysophyllum/planchonella/pleioluma sebertii
This is what I found:
http://www.endemia.nc/flore/fiche1310.htmlThe big differences are the fruit, described as the size of an olive and is nothing like the cut open one Jackfruitwhisperer pictured. The only actual pic i could find for pouteria arguacoensium is this one the fruit is on the right but im not sure its accurate. But its closer to the fruit grapenush pictured.
Anyone seen pouteria siebertii in its homeland? Or have a plant not sourced from madeira? Id appreciate any thoughts or if people did get seeds of this specimen and theyve got pics id love to see it. If also appreciate any members opinions.
