Title: Zagara bianca flowers
Post by: piter601 on April 12, 2019, 01:02:05 AM
Are young flowers of Zagara Bianca lemon always and with no exception clear white? I bought lemon, according to seller Zagara Bianca, with white- pourpish flower buds. Is this truly that selection of lemon??

I don't grow Zagara Bianca lemon, but from all the pictures of the tree that I've seen the flowers are pure white.

From Tintori: "This is probably a vegetative mutation of the Femminello Comune variety, known since ancient times and still widely grown in Sicily today. This particularly productive cultivar differs from the others in both the colour of its flowers, which are white, and its young shoots, which are an attractive pale green, like those of the orange, rather than the typical purplish colour."

Bianca means white, another italian name for this lemon is "Femminello fior d'arancio" because the flower looks like orange flower.

One comment.  Since the Zagara bianca lemon produces a medium sized fruit, and the fruit's rind is thick, this reduces the amount of its useable juice.

So there is no chance to meet Zagara Bianca lemon flower with trace of purple colour, right?

I personally think that the flowers of 'Zagara Bianca' can have a hint of purple on the outermost of the flowers, and that the rest of the flower parts are always pure white, I am not sure if that is just one flowering time of the year, or if it's just only under certain climate conditions. Some plants when they are younger will act out of their normal as well, this German website shows 'Zagara Bianca' having the hint of purple that I speak of, did they continue to have that hint of purple each year? https://gaertnerei--bender-shop.translate.goog/Sizilianische-Vier-Jahreszeiten-Zitrone-Baeumchen-Citrus-x-limon-Zagara-Bianca-Demeter?_x_tr_sl=de&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=en&_x_tr_pto=wapp

I have uncovered something.

What you have appears to be the 'Lunario' lemon, it's a popular lemon of the Amalfi coast like 'Zagara Bianca' both are called the 'four seasons lemon'.

The 'Lunario' lemon has a purplish tone to it's young leaves and to it's flower buds (unlike 'Zagara Bianca'), it has no purple in the actual flowers themselves, the flowers themselves are just as pure white as the flowers of the 'Zagara Bianca' are. The fruit of 'Lunario' are longer in shape than the fruit of 'Zagara Bianca', yet they are still the same type of shape.

The young leaves of 'Zagara Bianca' they are a light green in color, it's flowers are pure white just like the 'Zagara Bianca' variety, and it's fruits are more round shape, than the fruit of 'Lunario'.

I would like to add, based on the lunario lemon photo here, https://citrusvariety.ucr.edu/crc3159, my zagara bianca does not have a rind/pith as thick as the lunario.

My Zagara Bianca grows very juicy fruits even before they have fully turned.  I harvest them while they are mostly green (very prolific), so as to give the tree some break and help it grow vegetative shoots before the next fruiting cycle.
