Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: NDM vs Maha chanok
« on: July 30, 2021, 12:50:35 PM »
Both fruits are delicious and different enough. Someone said Maha Chanok (rainbow mango i think it translates) is naturally (seedling) a little bit dwarfish, haven't had this confirmed yet.

And both should be able to produce polyembryonic seeds so you should be able to get a nucellar clone so you don't have to spend heaps of money on a grafted tree. If the seed contents looks like a jigsawpuzzel it's probobly a polyembryonic seed. ( polyembryonic, more the one embryo).

The cedar bay mango is amazing too, some call it Rubau long, it's a green skin long mango with orange flesh.
I do not think Maha is dwarfish. On TAF page Alex negates it. From my experience: yes, it has long internodes, especially on the one dominant branch. What is also interesting, I cut off relentlessly all the growth tips on all branches, but still, the canopy is not dense by any standards.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugarloaf vs. Piņa Colada Mango

Following. Same conditions as John here. I do not worry so much about diseases here close to ocean, rather space...
I read on TAF page that Sugarloaf is low to moderate vigor. Not much about Pina Colada: "slow growers with spreading, open canopy."
I thought maybe I should order a custom graft of both on one tree?
You might want to think about adding cotton candy to that cocktail. It is said to be late season. According to my wife they definitely pick the right name for that variety.

Interesting idea. Will the 3 match in terms of vigor? I def don't want a Frankenstein tree.

Alex, thank you for the info! Since we have you here... What is the vigor of guava mango, and do you recommend it to backyard growers? I did my homework and know the production is mediocre, but I wonder how big the tree will grow.
He can only answer your question if he answers mine first!

I imagine life must be hard with such celebrity status for Alex. ;D

I would love to hear about Orange Sherbet too. I swear I am not your stalker, John, although I piggyback on your posts. I just have one OS in a pot waiting to be planted, but I still can change my mind, because I have other candidates in consideration (Angie, Pina Colada, Sugarloaf, NDM4)

I had sweet tart for the first time this year and it was a disappointment. But I want to give it another try. Do you know where they still sell them?
Is it possible that this cultivar likes close to ocean? The one that I had was from Excalibur, so far inland. Or maybe picked too early. It was sitting for a week to mature.
Other varieties from Excalibur were great, especially Beverly, my new love.

I know both and both are great mangos. I have maha  in my backyard and also considering planting ndm 4. They are different. Maha is more complex. It is also a surprisingly late cultivar. I have just picked my last fruit. Almost August.

I ate one this year in Mexico. Super tasty. Will they grow in Florida? I thought they are Passiflora maliformis (sweet calabash), but turns out it is a different species.

Sorry for this question, but have you ever thought of putting a condom on a papaya fruit? You can get a lot of 100 for about $23 at Walmart, so the cost is comparable to organza bags. People make balloons of them, so they will definitely stretch to a maradol size.
I have just gotten this idea. The only drawback that I can think of is that my plants are planted at the neighbor's fence. They are tall enough to have perfectly visible crowns and fruit.

Pineislander, thank you for all the info. I have just read in another thread that organza pouches work great for guava. Do you think they will also be effective on papaya?

Has any of you had any experience with Methyl Eugenol, as suggested in this thread? Please share.

I have not been in the forum for a few days. I wanted to share these pictures below and ask: is it possible that papayas get infested that early? The fruit has barely formed... But read your earlier posts and I have the answer. This is ridiculous.
Regarding guava: I have one from Lowes. It had the label "Pink guava" lol.
My papayas are very infested with fruit flies, guavas so far not. Maybe this is the one with thick skin?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Any info on Apricot Mango?
« on: July 24, 2021, 06:25:46 PM »
Does the fruit really have hints of apricot? I love apricots, but no chance for them here.
I am to grow pitombas and maybe Apricot mango.

If your fruit are getting hit that early, then yes do bag select fruits.
Thanks! It might be a silly question, but why only select fruits? I do not have very many of them...

Thank you for all the replies. I did not know they are a problem for guava too. So now I need to bag my guavas too. What bag do you use? Is the regular string bag ok?
Regarding papaya: PFF attacked mine well before ripe.
Let me understand it well: you do not recommend bagging papayas so early on. don't you? My fruits have just started forming. Some have still wilted petals on.

So, my first crop of Maradol papayas was infested by papaya fruit fly.
Recently I noticed a big swarm of these hijos de puta.
I googled out that you need to put a plastic bag on fruit to prevent it from infestation.

Google says it is the only way. But... if you do this, when is the right moment?
I put string bags on very small fruits. Won't they get cooked?

I really like papayas and now I started growing other cultivars from seeds from U of Hawaii seed lab and from alohaseeds.com.

What is your experience/success with battling papaya fruit fly?

That is exactly what I did with mealy bugs on my papaya. Flushed Them with a hose. Never came back.

At 21 such a remarkable young man. Already with deep interest in growing plants. This is so unfair.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pineapples--The Half Pot Experiment
« on: June 28, 2021, 07:48:24 PM »
TheWaterbug, I have never done any controlled experiments like yours. But I did one by chance. I have tens of pineapples grown from supermarket fruits. On one occasion, when I was transferring a lot of maybe 15 to pots, I run out of soil. Instead of mixing the remains with backyard soil, I planted the last one in whatever soil was left. Maybe 1/3 of the pot. Surprisingly, the last disadvantaged pineapple grew exceptionally well, I think even best of the lot. It is a pity that I did not mark it somehow when transferring to the ground. I thought it was just a coincidence.

I have a great hunting cat. Since he decided to live with us, I have not seen half a squirrel in my back and front yard. And he brings quite some rats and birds for dinner every few days. And he has great personality too!
I was even thinking about marrying him with a female cat with similar characteristics. Such great genes should not be wasted.

I am not a mango expert, but if you wanted Alphonso, you might want Angie. Alex from tropicalacresfarms.com advertises it as a great alternative to Alphonso. Another plus is that it is an early-season variety.

Sprouts supermarket is selling sugar baby seeded heirloom watermelons. At least in Florida. You can check them in your area, Sprouts usually has a similar assortment in various regions.

49
Seeded. Do you also have the impression that even the seeded one got worse these days? Is it because farmers go for varieties with longer shelf life?
