Phillipine Pointed Eggfruit (Canistel)
« on: February 13, 2013, 04:11:30 PM »
Been eating these Phillippine Pointed eggfruits (canistels). They are really great. No latex, very moist, and super large fruits, with small seed. Can eat a whole one no problem, and that's saying a lot because each one is close to one pound. Tree from seed produced about 25 large fruits after being in ground only 3 years.

By the way, from the pics those seeds look different than most canistel seds I have seen however it may just be the pictures.

Like the fruit, the seeds are just more elongated and pointed at each end, and thinner than regular seeds. Also they are smaller and lighter.

I'm a large guy, so i assure you i have large hands to go along with the large body. These fruits are 5-6 inches long and weigh just under a pound each.
The ross sapote has longitudinal striping, very visible when the fruts are still green.

Last time I made some comments on your red pine apple.
This time I would request you for some seeds of this pointed eggfruit.

Oscar,

How does it compare with the Saludo canistel of Frankies nursery? which by the way came from Dr. coronel. :)

Yes, but i'm still eating them. Will have to do something soon as they are all dead ripe! As soon as i remove all the seeds and clean them i'll contact all the people that expressed an interest. Don't worry, i haven't forgotten you all.

Don't think so, but will take a closer look to compare them.

I can't compare them side by side as i don't have Saludo. But i also ate Saludo at Frankies (many years ago) and it's also an excellent one. So i'd say they are both winners.
Didn't know Saludo comes from Phillippines. Not surprising though because they seem to appreciate this fruit there, where they call it Tiesa.

Oscar,

Yup, I bought a grafted Saludo Canistel from Dr. Coronel. :) has not fruited.  All of the native canistels here have dry flesh.  I think canistel do better in Hawaii because of the great weather and fertile soil.  You have a winner there. :)

Berns, suggest you plant Ross sapote. That's another winner, I think they will produce moist fruits in any climate where they grow.
