Post by: Akebia on August 11, 2019, 03:44:17 PM
Has anyone collected and grown out seedlings of spineless chaya?

I've always grown it from cuttings.

I've had some volunteers which I think were from seeds though it's possible they came from random stem parts.

have 4-5 types right now.

Cnidoscolus aconitifolius cuttings are excellent.

One type is the one Dr. David Fairchild had at The Kampong, saved by fellow RFCI Miami members. Another from Larry Schokman, two more from around town, which both appear to have no stinging nettles.

MameyDisco, let me know if you get seed forming, I’d love to try to grow out seedlings.  I’m also curious about how fertile they might be, like are there lots of flowers but few seed.

Of the 4 types I am growing ATM, one is a cutting of Dr. David Fairchild's chaya that he grew at The Kampong in Miami's Coconut Grove. The other notable one is from Larry Schokman, I am unaware of where this one came from. The Dr. Fairchild specimen came from Cuba according to my research. It came via the Guthrie family members of The Rare Fruit Council Int'l. (RFCI), Maimi. The 3rd was given to me by a friend in the (SFPS), and the 4th came from our yard. 2 of the 4 have stinging nettles.

Akebia you should order some cuttings. They are the easiest things to grow and the cuttings can be shipped for a month and still grow. I had a branch sitting around for a month on wire mesh it started curling upwards and growing. If you want good seed you could grow it next summer. The Estrella variety flowers the best. You basically cannot kill this plant except maybe if you drown it.
