How tall does the GEM variety reach at maturity? I can't seem to find this info in any published material.

They are supposed to stay small around 15ft.  Can probably be kept smaller with pruning.

What a great forum!

If I have space for two avocado trees ~12 feet in height, do you recommend I buy two GEM trees or one GEM and a second variety? I live in the Los Angeles area too. I'm wary of pruning a 25 ft tree down to 12 ft though.

Thanks!

I ended up buying two GEM trees and planted them yesterday. I originally planned to plant them 10ft apart, but somehow they ended up 6ft apart. Not sure how that happened but I'm a bit worried that they'll be overcrowded. Was planning to relocate one of them but it's raining in southern California right now.  :-\

Where did you buy them from? I am looking to get one as well.

I'm an arms dealer and had a local cartel coerce the farmers into selling me two trees.

If only my life was that exciting. It was literally the first search result when I googled "buy gem avocado tree".

http://gregalder.com/yardposts/where-to-buy-an-avocado-tree/

Go down to where they talk about GEM. Took me about 4-5 hours roundtrip from where I live. The roots are in excellent condition (thick and long), but the trees themselves are about 12 inches high (roots about 15 inches deep). I'd estimate they'll produce fruit in 1 or 2 seasons. There are already a lot of buds for new leaf growth already. I removed the stakes since I prefer my young trees to grow without them. You have a variety of rootstocks to choose from as well, I went with dusa. I was planning to whitewash them but didn't have time before the rain came. Excited because I love avocados and these are my first two avocado trees planting in the ground. That makes them fruit tree #15 and #16 at my home.

Can I still get GEM avocado if I am not affiliated with arms trade? It appears ELi doesn't want to respond to anyone outside arms trade  ;)

Sometimes it takes one or two days before he replies. Just call him directly with the phone number on his website. He usually answers the phone. I literally bought the two avocado trees yesterday.

Tintn00,
Hows the pricing on the various varieties compared to big box stores?
Probably worth the drive for the GEM but wondering for the other types too.

Has anyone here tasted a Gem Avocado or does the allure live within the great marketing name?
I thought general consensus to this point was very slow growing.

The California avocado cartel already rejected it.
It must be worst than Hass.

I paid $32 per tree, each was 12 inches high and 15 inches deep with thick long roots. My local Armstrong sells slightly taller avocado trees $39 each. I bought GEM because my family in Europe say it tastes similar to Hass. It's supposedly a slow / low vigor tree with high productivity, whatever that means. I needed something smaller than Hass without the hassle of aggressive pruning to keep less than 15 feet high.

The commission rejected it?  Do you have a link with this info?

The commission is created for CA Hass.
Any varieties not Hass or not grown in CA will most likely to be rejected.

Beside that, it's nearly 2 decades since GEM released and I've not seen a fruit in the market.
IMO it has been rejected.

Hi everyone! I’m new to the form and growing avocados trees. I have a Hass Avocado tree that is doing amazing but I wanted to branch out and try a new variety. I heard that the GEM avocado was a good variety to try. Well here in Texas nobody sells the GEM variety so I decided to take my search to the internet. I noticed that www.adamtropics.com ships avocado trees to Texas. Has anybody had an experience with this company? Or does anybody know of a company that ships avocado trees?

Thanks for the help!

I didn’t know Adamtropics ships by mail. Last time I talked with someone, they were selling through farmers market and delivering by truck, and didn’t offer pickup from their farm/orchard. I bought my GEM avocado from https://www.elisfarmsnursery.com/ . They don’t ship either.
