Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passionfruit Protection
« on: October 27, 2021, 03:50:32 PM »
Hello everyone!

Up here in 9b, it’s starting to get chilly again, with some temps getting into the 40’s. So far, my 15-foot or so passionfruit vine seems to be doing OK, it even has a couple flower buds on it and pulled through a wind/rain storm unscathed. However, I was just wondering if I should do anything to protect it during the coming winter, when temps can get into the 30’s at night?

Thanks!
Sorry I was gone for a while.

I'm in California. I'm wondering if I could plant sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) as a winter crop and have them overwinter?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Myrtaceae
« on: March 29, 2021, 09:55:05 PM »
I have recently stumbled upon and taken somewhat of an interest in fruit trees in family Myrtaceae; specifically Eugenia, Plinia, and Syzygium. I looked at Grow All The Fruits' video on tropical fruit in the Bay Area, and was just wondering about ppl's experience w/ these, and if they are actually growable and Joe didn't just get lucky?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When to put passionfruit outside
« on: March 23, 2021, 10:39:11 AM »
I have a passionfruit vine inside that has grown so large that I don’t think I have any more space for it. Since it is now spring, my intentions have been to move it outside, although I have still been getting some nighttime lows in the 40s F for some reason. Would it still be OK to put it outside? I’ve set aside a spot in my garden for it, a sunny spot between a wall and a fence. I’ve heard that proximity to structures keep temps from falling too low. Any advice appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / An experiment
« on: February 02, 2021, 02:34:04 PM »
I'm planning on doing a little experiment this coming spring. I'm going to place several tropical edibles outside throughout the garden's various micro-climates, and see how they fare, with the end goal of getting at least one of them to bear ripe fruit. The two "test subjects" that I have currently obtained (Neither are outside yet, I'm waiting for spring to aid acclimation) are a "Purple Possum" passionfruit vine and an unknown variety of cherimoya. Also thinking of trying avocado, starfruit, taro, and white sapote.

I was just checking to see if any of those are bad options for zone 9b, or if anyone wants to recommend anything else.

Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Just out of curiosity

Hi everyone!

I was wondering what it might cost to buy and maintain a tropical farm in Hawai'i? I saw some people doing them on YouTube, and my curiosity was piqued. I am extremely unlikely to buy one anytime soon, and I'm just curious.

Thank you!

Hi there!

Just was wondering if I can grow cherimoya trees and/or other Annonas in containers, for reason of lack of much space?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Exotic Fruit Maui
« on: December 18, 2020, 05:00:34 PM »
Hi everyone!

In a few months' time, I will likely be taking a vacation to Maui to celebrate the end of the pandemic and the (not-)Great Quarantine. Do any locals/people with experience with this location know where I can find exotic fruit on the west side of the island (e.g. Ka'anapali, Lahaina)?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annonas in 9b
« on: December 09, 2020, 09:23:19 PM »
Hi TFF!

I have been doing some research and have noticed that growing cherimoya and atemoya in my climate (Zone 9b) should be possible. Could I get a couple professional opinions, and are there any other Annonas that I can grow here? Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Reputability
« on: November 17, 2020, 06:46:37 PM »
Hi everyone-

I was just wondering about the reputability of sites like seedman.com (NOT to be confused with seedsman.com) and tradewindsfruit.com. Has anyone bought from either of these sites?

Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question

Hi-
What can I grow in a climate where temps can exceed 100ºF in summer but rarely go below 35ºF in winter (border of 9b-10a)? Thank you!
