$50 for 5 gallon well hardened off.

I'm interested and had the same question as Shovel n Seed if it can be shipped without a pot / smaller container. Also, what is the rootstock?

My "Papa" mamey arrived. Shipped and delivered within a week. I can't wait for peak mamey season next year and see what varieties will be in available. I've been following Lara Farms for a couple years now on YouTube ever since I started growing fruit trees and am excited to see the online store evolve.

I've never eaten it before but I would love to try one. If anyone has or knows of anyone that has fruit I'd definitely buy some to try.
Earthy Delights recently opened orders for this season. If they still process orders like they did a couple years ago, depending on when an order is placed, you'll either get mostly wild/non-named varieties of decent taste (early season) or named varieties (later season). Make sure to pick the fastest shipping possible. Pawpaws are quick to expire in transit, but Earthy Delights mitigates it as best they can by shipping with ice packs.

I just bought some pawpaws off of this listing yesterday. I've also never tried them but it seemed like a reasonable deal.

Nice. I may buy some from here.

I have never eaten a green sapote, how is the taste ?

Is there a similar fruit taste as the green sapote ? I like the taste of mamey sapote.
I just received the fruit from SEEDTALKOC and can say it tastes exactly like mamey. No differences that I could detect. Maybe less stringy texture, but I would need to try more to say for certain.

My green sapote arrived today without a scratch. Like RGVgardener, I've been waiting two years to acquire a seedling. Thank you.

Box arrived and very pleased. The Guava lived up to the hype and has instantly shot up there as one of my favorites alongside Coconut Cream. Thank you very much for sending so many great varieties to try. Looking forward to next season.

Year of the Durian has it in stock. It's a bulk listing that comes with other frozen fruits, but it might be the only way to try it aside from visiting the source country/state in person. Just note that in a frozen-to-thawed state, it is mushy, but I still enjoyed it even though I still would like to try it fresh one day.

They had cempedak too some months ago.

I mean how much are we talking per fruit? I normally just eat all my abiu and sell the seeds at a reasonable price here. I would have too charge some outrageous price to make it worth it and both abiu and white sapote seem like nightmares to ship.

I've seen white sapote posted on Etsy for the past two years in a row around mid-summer. Last year I bought 3.5lbs for $37.90 in late July.
Abiu I've only seen available for pre-order on MiamiFruit. Apparently the waitlist is so long, you may end up waiting a couple years before your order is fulfilled.

If any private abiu sellers are reading, jot me down as someone else who is very interested in buying some.

Did the $37.90 include shipping? Was it a flat rate box or something else. Was the fruit beat up or did it ripen properly. Mangos are super easy and that's why everyone is doing that.
Shipping was included; USPS priority mail. Fruit all ripened properly and within days after receiving.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Casimiroa pringlei
« on: March 31, 2021, 08:07:41 AM »
- have you ever tasted casimiroa pringlei? Is it much more bitter than casimiroa edulis?
The only white sapote I've ever tasted have been sweet, but they were probably the common variety. Pringle's Sapote tastes like kumquats to me: citrusy, bitter, and pungent. I can't remember the texture, but the fruits were 90% seed and 10% pulp.

- how did casimiroa edulis perform in Texas during this cold snap?
I kept mine in pots and brought them in doors when it was set to go 35F or below so can't say. I know some are growing trees in-ground in the area but they've died back to the ground in milder winters and haven't fruited.

- More generally, are there hardy varieties of avocado trees in Texas (fantastic, wilma...) did they survive this rare event?
Local grower Jerry Satterlee growing avocados in central Texas (Zone 8). No word yet on the trees after the snow storm: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC52vOVp03R-Ccl27U03rJ7g

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Casimiroa pringlei

I've posted in previous Casimiroa pringlei threads. Mine's been growing from seed in a pot from August 2019 - March 2020. Planted in-ground that spring and protected with 30% shade cloth throughout the central Texas summers that go 100F+. Watered every 3 days. 2ft tall at the end of the season.

This winter, it was protected with a makeshift tent using a Planket cover. After the snowstorm, it looked perfectly fine for a few days, but its leaves then dried up and dropped like a common citrus tree as a response to frost. Bad frost crack near the trunk too. Since two weeks ago, it's been leafing out about 6in from the base. Only about an inch of dieback, but no buds on top yet. Pic attached. Painted the bark with IV Organics to deter pests from the frost crack. Hopefully only a few more seasons before I can start testing graft compatibility with white sapote.

Also, side note, but I'm wondering if the Pringle's Sapote going around our area is a misidentified Casimiroa greggii and not the true Casimiroa pringlei. Leaves and fruit are a perfect match for greggii, not at all like pringlei. Nothing major to be worried about since they're both from the same general region and the one being sourced out is proving to be cold hardy.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: Where To Buy Tropical Fruit Online
« on: December 16, 2020, 11:08:21 PM »
Hey everyone! Who is currently selling varieties of tropical fruits for shipping now? I'm particularly interested in Eggfruit, Mangosteen, Dragonfruit, etc but interested in what's available at the moment. I've already bought from Miamifruit and was pleased but didn't get as much variety in the variety boxes as hoped. I'm not interested in what Tropicalfruitbox or Robert Was Here have at the moment, so what are my other options?
I recommend Etsy. I've seen quite a few new reputable exotic fruit sellers open up shop over the past year. For canistel / eggfruit in particular, I recommend FreshFloridaFruit who I bought from last year. For what's in prime season at the moment, there are quite a few listings for black sapote on the site if you're interested. They're generally the cheapest exotic fruit you can find with the smallest availability window.

Thanks Adam. My Peluche arrived yesterday. The packaging was above and beyond to guarantee its safe arrival. Very much worth the wait. It's already in the ground that I've been preparing throughout the months since ordering.

Wanderlust Nursery has Chilean Guava seeds listed but they're currently out of stock. One Green World lists named varieties, but no seeds.

Pitangatuba is common among collectors here. Someone should be able to help you with this one.

Achacha is uncommon. A local specialty fruit market in Houston, TX - Linda's Tropical Fruits - got a limited quantity shipment of the fruit (six bags of 2lbs or so) during the summer of 2019. I was lucky to get a hold of a bag, but regret not saving the seeds. No telling if they were viable or not. I know of someone else who found an international market carrying them in New England, but do not know the details. So know they make it stateside once in a blue moon if you can't get a hold of seeds or seedling from a collector.

Olosapo is rare to show up in trades. I'd like a seedling myself.

If you do end up traveling to Houston and are committed to trying the fruit, you could stop by Linda's Tropical Fruits on the west side of the city. I'm not sure if they have any fresh ones in stock at the moment, but this time last year they had a few in the fridge probably placed there after spending some time on the shelf. Still very good. JRN Nursery's second site is also a couple miles away from the shop.

Blog post on successful black sapote grafts onto American persimmon: Florida Fruit Geek - Chocolate pudding fruit successfully grafted onto American persimmon

I wonder how it would take to Texas persimmon (Diospyros texana)?

Since it grows farther north it might help a little with zone pushers... also it is a smaller tree, maybe it would act as a dwarfing rootstock.
I'm interested in this one as well. Texas persimmons are very drought and heat tolerant.

Every Sprouts I've been to in Florida and Texas seems to carry just one from Melissa's Produce, always rotting away on the shelf designated for tropicals. $1.30/lb if I remember right.

H.E.B.

H.E.B. - Publix equivalent - in central Texas has been carrying them year-round since at least last year. Usually a minimum of 3 on display of varying degrees of ripeness. Last summer, in season, they were $1.13/lb. Currently around the $1.20/lb mark. Two different producers from Mexico. Forgot the name of one, but the main one is Cabello which surprisingly has also been supplying mangosteen to the shelves. The first one I ever bought in June of last year was the best. All the others since have been subpar and have suffered from flesh rot in the pulp. I have one on the counter right now which I hope doesn't disappoint now that the season should be starting.

Linda's Tropical Fruits

The cheapest I've ever seen, and the largest ones, were at a small specialty store, Linda's Tropical Fruits in Houston, TX. $0.99/lb. I regret not buying one last time I went, but I did end up getting a non-frozen durian that made up for it.

Fruit also just arrived for me and not a single one was busted. All were very juicy and fresh. I had to share, so less to go around and be a good judge of flavor, but Sabara and Red were my favorite. They had the hints of blueberry I was looking for out of jaboticabas. Thank you for the package and the chance to try all these varieties.
