Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ever blooming mulberry
« on: December 19, 2017, 05:08:23 PM »
I live in zone 9b ion the Florida Coast. I have 3 everblooming mulberries and they took a whipping after the hurricanes in October. To get them bearing again should I prune them. Do they fruit from new growth?

Where can I get a mini plant?

I’ll include coconut palms and other fruiting plants in this question as not to digress from the typical forum subject matter, but my wife and I are building a new home and I’d like to landscape with some rarer palms and more specialized plants and foliage. Is there a “big book” or two that anyone can recommend that’s all encompassing with Photos and info? It will need to be a Florida book, not just a general info book. Thanks!

the University of Florida has several good books you can buy online from their bookstore.

So how long will it take my tree to start bearing? It bloomed a little last year for the first time, the tree is three years in the ground and is about 8 feet tall.

I have brown burned looking spots on one of my avocados and looked uhder the leaf and saw some tiny black headed bugs aunning around. Will a spray of horticultural oil kill them? I think they are lace bugs.

I am new to grafting and learned that there is a chart somewhere that gives the best months to graft different tropical fruits and best temperature range for graft. Where can I find this.

I don't know much about mangos but recently attended a talk by a grower at our club meeting and he recommended using lie nitrogen ratios. The goal is not dark green leaves but high sugar fruit. I am trying his ideas.

I went to one mango tasting event at a local nursery and found most mangoes had a resinous off taste and were overripe but one stood out, Venus. Now where can I get it and harder yet where do I plant it. Maybe my grumichama cherry if it does not start bearing this spring. It is 4 years old.

A local grower, lets call him Alex told me at a recent fruit club meeting that he is not as keen on sweet tart as he once was because of low production. Of course he is commercial so for dooryard growers it may produce enough.

I have tried ginger but it does not grow. How much sun does it need. I gave tumerics but just learned what they were, used to call them hidden ginger because the beautiful flower is almost hidden down low.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Calcium Helpful
« on: July 21, 2017, 11:09:31 AM »
I attended a talk last night about sapodilla trees and the lecturer recommended calcium for slow growing saps. I wonder if this might be true for other tropical fruits , my Grumichama is very slow growing and not fruiting after 4 years in the ground. A ready source for calcium is sheet rock.

Just got my first fruit from the Ruby Supreme guava. Very nice, yeiilw, tender, few seeds!  Fragrant fruit. Shared it with a friend and now he wants one. We went to 5 places but no luck, but one place has Barbie Pink that is supposed to be as good and larger fruit. Anyone can offer ideas?
