Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone tasted Juliette mango this season?
« on: December 01, 2023, 07:16:57 AM »
Can't believe that was over 10 yrs ago lol. That tree was in Pembroke Pines at my moms place for 9 years. Took very well to tip pruning- would get bushy, thick and rounded with it' already naturally short inter nodal growth! Would flower consistently. Hold allot of fruit that, to me, didn't taste like 'Julie' but shape and size wise, I see the resemblance (Two other mature Julie trees are on that property still). Disease resistance, this tree was spotless (I foliar sprayed micros regularly when I lived there). Brix would be in the mid 20s consistently. The only con would be the short season. All the Juliette's would ripen in 2-3 weeks.
The reason why it gets lost among the crowd is because they are better flavor mangoes out there. Sweet Tart is still my no. 1. LZ... a festering 2nd. Blew my socks off. Thanks Zands :).

I have yet to taste fresh Pulasan, but right now Lychees are my favorite. Then Longan. Then rambutan.

Oh my. Talk about abundance. Just awesomeness.

I planted a 4' 'Sherwood' this spring and was pleasantly surprised to get 1 fruit from it this September. It was redish brown all round and 3/4 " in diameter. I might as well have been eating a ripe apple. So sweet and juicy! Promising my area (FL 9b).

I ate some early this year in Guyana. If it weren't for the astringency, I'd probably like the fruit more raw. It's commonly eaten mixed with salt, pepper, and some form of "green seasoning" (culantro/grated garlic/diced white onion/hottt pepper/lime juice). Would love to get plants or seeds of non astringent types. Will be on the look out.

Triple A (AAA) +++ 5* Seller. Great communication. Excellent Packaging. As W alluded to, I had my shipment from him lost in transit for 3 week. Not his fault. But the jabo survived with not a leaf lost and soil still moist.  Reputable seller/ member.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: who's still eating mango every day?

I still have a couple of Mahas and Tog bi Cons that I picked mature, counter ripened then refrigerated. Fresh picked ripe mangoes ended about 2 weeks ago for me .

I've been looking for this fruit tree as well (balata). I'm from there and haven't had this fruit in ages. I bought some seeds of 4-5 species related to it (noting the pictures of the fruit as well) in hope they would be close it. I have some sources in T&T that sell grafted trees from fruiting trees. Rare tropical fruits are picking up allot of interest over there. Dragon fruit has some people crazy over there.

In any case, not to derail the thread :) :

1. Blackberries
2. Dwarf Mulberry (not the common 'Everbearing' junk. So much fruit every time. Sweet juicy raisins)
3. Red Jaboticaba. Bears multiple times a year. Can induce a crop with some N. Not all 'Reds' are the same (small fruit not as sweet vs. Big sweet fruit with small seeds)
4. Zill Dark or other non astringent surinam cherries.
5. Top Tier mango. Go with what tastes good for you. If I only had a single lot of land, Julie or Maha Chanok.
6. Coconuts. Can do so much with this fruit. If your area is favorable for it, it should be the first tree you plant!

That's one healthy seedling Foresight. Beautiful. All the seeds I ever got were as hard as a rock.

If I were to do it, I'd use a table top Vise and a grinder with a cutting blade.

I've germinated seeds I've acquired from a trip. They take 7-8 months or more to break that hard shell. I used a 1 gallon pot with potting mix and never let the soil dry out. An area with Automatic irrigation would be ideal. No direct sun light. Animal can dig up the seeds (rats, mice, squirrels). I Think next time I'll remove that shell and see if the seed germinates like a mango embryo.

'Tog Bi Con'. Not your typical SE Asian mango. Grows tall first then wide. More vigorous than 'Ivory'. And Possibly 'Valencia Pride'. 3-4lbs monster size mangoes in clusters of 2-4. Orange fleshed fruit that taste like Wrigley's 'Juicy Fruit' bubble gum/ jack fruit. Seed thin like NDM. Absolutely no fruit splitting from my 8-9 yr old tree. Some branches may need support during season. Haven't been able to crack a brix past 22 as of yet.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Surinam Cherry - Taste
« on: August 06, 2023, 07:59:22 PM »
If it's a true 'Zill Dark', it tastes pretty awesome (zero gasoline taste with a juicy, very sweet/ tart flavor). They get this way when you hold them lightly between your thumb and index finger, lightly, and they fall right into your hands. They can get pretty big as well. Haven't taste 'Lolita' or 'Dark Sweet' / 'Sweet Dark' yet. 'Dasyblasta' is pretty awesome tasting as well but red and a smaller fruit. I have a dry/ sweet one that's not as juicy but has ripples like a pumpkin and only turns orange when ripe. Zero gasoline taste. And as always, full sun and optimum growing conditions for a healthy tree to get the best fruit.

I investigated further today and found the tag in the pot. 'G. MD'. I think it's 'madruno.'

Got my seeds today  :) .  Took 6 weeks with phyto.
